turbo spools slow?

t3-t4 50trim on ford 2.3

boost doesn't even start to come in untill almost 4k rpm and even with the wastegate actuator unhooked it wil only make around 18psi

I'm thinking the wastegate is bad/stuck is there anyway to test this?

anything else I should be looking for?

thanks

Exhaust leaks pre-turbo, damaged turbo/turbine wheel, wastegate stuck open, and boost leaks are all possibilities. Could also be timing, but I doubt it would be that severe.

cracked waste gate..leak boost :(

cracked waste gate..leak boost :(

Huge amount of back pressure will do it also...added to the previous ideas.

Wastegate stuck or bleeding open. A physical inspection will tell you more.

I had a Turbonetics Newgen that lost a pin connecting to flapper door..the wg would stick open, partically open, and finally it stuck closed for a very wild ride.

I'm assuming this is still an internal wastegate? If so, I would take off the turbo or turbine housing (if possible on its own, not familiar with t3/t4s) and look at the housing around the wastegate hole. If it's cracked bad enough it'll leak past. Same thing happened on my DSM with very similar symptoms.

What exhaust wheel and turbine housing does the turbo have?

Check for exhaust leaks.

Check for boost Leaks.

Check for cracks in the exhaust housing around the wastegate valve.

Is the actuator arm adjustable? If so make sure it is adjusted properly.

Holy Crap....

Didn't know you were on here.

Welcome..and nice 1st post
