thorne
I've been driving my buddys base model RIO. I would like to say god damn it's way the fuck better then the economy car's of when I was a kid. My old Cavvy had issues getting onto the freeway @ 65 by the end (WOT) was the only option. this little kia had no problem. The suspension even with out powersteering destroyed my old 323/tracer. Over all I'm impressed on where technology has taken us.

ImUrOBGYN
I just raced a modded Insight around Laguna Seca earlier this week. Ok, so it was GT4. But I did technically race one. It was a waste of money.

Science Abuse
1989 Honda Civic CRX HF ETC We're not better by much... and remember the crx was a fun car to drive... nobodys going to be autocrossing an insight any time soon I was going t post that car, too. The "tech" of contemporary fuel sipping cars is way overblown. Why spend $30k on a car full of expensive parts when you just need a good commuter? If the cougar sells, I'll be looking for a CRX HF. It will get every carbon fiber body panel on the market (There are many, will be painted of course) with lexan back glass. It will have a bigger yet quiet exhaust, a CAI, aluminum radiator, and a tune up (among other things). We'll see how far we can push that 50+ MPG. I've said it before and I'll say it again, new cars suck.
TURBOED
My old daily driver crx si got almost 40mpg on the highway, and at 108hp, it had enough get-up-and-go to be a fun little ride. Of course crx's don't exactly have the passenger/cargo room of the new econo cars...
87GT
I wish I didn't sell my 91 civic dx 4 speed. 45miles to the gallon is great! It was fun to drive too just wasn't quick enough. It doesn't matter though when you get more then 40mpg
dan93z28
new cars suck. couldnt a said it better myself. they got no soul.
craig71188
Oh, do I feel old.... Economy cars of yesteryear for me: Pinto Vega Capri I Capri II Fiesta Chevette Engines ranging from 1.6L to the BIG 2.8L V6 with all of 105 hp (from the big Holley/Wber 2bl carburetor)!!! I was working for Nationwise A.P. selling 5 quart jugs of oil (long before they came back as gallon (4 qt) jugs today - and watch the people go out and just dump some in these things every time they put gas in them. We had Honda Civic's too: http://tbn0.google.com/images?q=tbn:9XN6y5ErfLVjJM:http://www.channel4.com/4car/media/100-greatest/03-large/48-honda-civic.jpg It was a step up from the "600": http://tbn0.google.com/images?q=tbn:TT9qRVzkc8AJXM:http://www.microcar.org/2001/34a.jpg And "70" series tires were WIDE, "60" series VERY WIDE, and "50" series were for race cars - on the rear ONLY - and for the most part bias ply. If any of the above mentioned terms are not familiar to you - congratulations! You didn't miss much!

mmrmnhrm
Still a couple of years to go on my warranty... then we'll see what kind of numbers I can put up with mods. In the meanwhile, 60mpg summer / 45mpg winter isn't anything to complain about.
BuckeyeGT
the 3 cylinder geos of the early 90s still rape all. 48 mpg!
SPLN SUX
I too will soon be looking for a CRX HF... but not for its economy...
