Draco-REX
I'm not overly happy with all the chrome in my headlghts and taillights. I can bake my headlights and paint the chrome inside, but the tails require cutting and resealing. Overall, the tails will be a PITA to paint. So another option I'm looking at is getting overlays. But how are the police around here about tinted taillights? Should I not even bother with the overlays and do the cutting?

We've done a few customer trucks/SUV's, but we use the nightshades style paint. It takes preping, wet sanding and some patience. But in the end looks great if you smooth it out. I think the overlay would look pretty tough.
Draco-REX
Here's how they look now: http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1128/1343375266_e32886b21a.jpg I have a few options: Just cover the chrome lower half: http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y42/BlueBatmobile2005/Subaru%20WRX%20STI%20Overlays/stit106d.jpg A light smoke full coverage: http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y42/BlueBatmobile2005/Subaru%20WRX%20STI%20Overlays/stit206.jpg A darker smoke: http://www.pcpcdallas.com/images/film/hs-tuners-red-06-wrx-rear.jpg Or "Stealth" smoke: http://www.pcpcdallas.com/productimages/ss-tails-psm.jpg Just for reference, these are what the painted tails would look like: http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b16/stype002/Sti/DSC03733.jpg I'm mostly leaning toward the HotSubarus.com Smoke, or their Stealth Smoke if I go with the overlays. But the painted tails have that OEM (not stock, but OEM) look that I like.

Skinner
personally the painted tails look the best. As for appling a overlay its not that hard to do just takes a little time. You put it on like you put on tint. make sure tint is warmed up (is more controllable and easier to apply).
HotCarl
I like the 'light smoke full coverage', its inconspicuous enough to fly under the radar, anything darker will DEFINITLY look aftermarket and could cause some unwanted attention. SpaceGhost
Or you can buy 05 Tail lights.
Martin
I like the dark stealth and the bottom half cover. it looks great. most cops wont be dicks about it unless your being a dick so i think you will be good. if you realy want to do the work the painted looks best
Crossle
We met a guy at the QSL meets that has a MKI MR2 and put speaker cover over his tail lights. That thin black transparent material. It looked surprisingly good.
93toNV
Painted FTW, but if you dont wanna do that, I would go with Niteshades on the bottom half.
v6grandprixgt98
I have had my tails tinted with nightshades for two years. I have gotten pulled over for them three times but never got a ticket. Hilliard told me I needed reflectors on my lights and to go buy some at the auto store and stick em on. Norwalk told me I needed to take my tail light covers off. and OSP told me he thought I turned my lights off when I turned the corner. I personally think they look best tinted dark on black cars. Draco-REX
Hmm.. I think I'm going to go with the paint then... Going to have to pick up a dremel and silicon sealer, and hope I don't screw 'em up.

Going to have to pick up a dremel and silicon sealer, and hope I don't screw 'em up. I painted my headlights on my 06WRX back when I had it, I was also going to paint the rears but i said fuck it. Its super-simple to do and I know if you havent already there is a whole page dedicated to it on Nasioc.com. I never used a dremel, I just heated my oven up to 250 put the lights in for 20min pulled them apart, re-sealed them and put em back on the car. I advise doing the headlights it looks amazing with a flat black coat over the chrome. Here are a couple old pictures. from this. http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c375/allaboutwrx/BlackingOutTheLights004.jpg to this. http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c375/allaboutwrx/6-29-06013.jpg

Tell me you don't have the Chargespeed v2 lip. I definately have to paint my headlights/tails now so our cars aren't indentical. I like that look, How do you tint your tails. Cougar1647545494
The painted tails looks the best. I had to rip apart my headlight to remove that orange reflector and fab up a clear piece to replace it. It wasn't that bad, just make sure you seal them up good. Otherwise it'll fog. The CS V2 replica (and a bunch of other stuff) should be here sometime today. Hopefully the rain will stop long enough for me to put it on. ProwlerZ
I'd say VHT 'em. Fairly easily reversed, and if you are buying something else, it's a nice cheap first step...
