12oclocker
Ok, the jackass that put the cylinder head cover on my 400EX before I bought it over torqued EVERY cylinder head bolt, stretched EVERY bolt, so the bolts that didn't break off, are no good, and stretched....problem is the markup on these suckers is crazy! It would cost about $50 for me to buy just these few stupid bolts, anyone know where I can get these cheaper?it's a 2002, these are the part numbers....90004-GHB-700 (qty 6)90004-GHB-710 (qty 1)90004-GHB-760 (qty 2)90084-KCY-670 (qty 3)95701-08070-00 (qty 1)90004-GHB-770 (qty 1).90004-GHB-780 (qty 1). yotaman88210
Youre saying it would cost, in total, around $30 ? Just suck it up and buy em, that doesnt seem too expensive at all for head bolts. I could understand the complaining if they were $30 a bolt, but $30 total isnt bad at all
flounder
First, I had the same problem on some of my case bolts on my YZ250. When I split the case last year I noticed some of the bolts were stretched and looked warbled' <- if thats a word.Either way, I got the length and thread pitch for one of the good bolts and hit up lowes and Home depot. I was able to get what I needed there for dirt cheap. If that doesnt work for you, see if you have a Fastenall in your area.. They have just about anything you can imagine. xtremef4i
If that doesnt work for you, see if you have a Fastenall in your area.. They have just about anything you can imagine.+1 they have any thread combo you could want. There's one in Troy and the nre one they built on Kings Chapel but not sure if they are officially open yet. And I am sure they could special order bolts too if they dont have them. But, knowing Honda, there are probably going to be at least one or two you have to order thru the Honda dealer only. that seems to always be my luck anyway. xtremef4i
Dont you have friends that work at the Honda dealership in Troy? Cant they hook a brotha up? I just bought parts from there and got hooked up. I also know a person that works there so that might be why I got a deal. I looked on their website, looked up the parts I needed and wrote down the price. the prices were cheaper online than they are in person at the dealership. But, they make their money back in shipping off the website. So get the cheaper prices of their website, write them down then take it in the store and tell them you got the prices on their website. They should honor the lower price since it came from their website. Ask for Stacey behind the parts counter and tell her Brad sent ya. 12oclocker
yeah I just went to www.hondapowersportsoftroy.com, and priced out all the little nuts and bolts I need to replace and it came to $66.78I definitely need to find these somewhere else, cause I've never paid more than 50 cents for a bolt tops at a hardware store, charging almost 6 bucks for a tiny 8mm bolt is crazy in my book. If I only needed a few of these suckers it wouldn't be so bad, but I have to replace ever bolt on the cylinder head cover, and some other misc bolts too.6 Honda BOLT, FLANGE (6X35) for 2002 Honda TRX400EX90004-GHB-700 $2.55 $15.30 1 Honda BOLT, FLANGE (6X40) for 2002 Honda TRX400EX90004-GHB-710 $2.55 $2.55 2 Honda BOLT, FLANGE (6X65) for 2002 Honda TRX400EX90004-GHB-760 $3.31 $6.62 3 Honda BOLT, FLANGE (6X118) for 2002 Honda TRX400EX90084-KCY-670 $5.72 $17.16 1 Honda BOLT, FLANGE (8X70) for 2002 Honda TRX400EX95701-08070-00 $0.98 $0.98 1 Honda BOLT, FLANGE (6X70) for 2002 Honda TRX400EX90004-GHB-770 $3.40 $3.40 1 Honda BOLT, FLANGE (6X75) for 2002 Honda TRX400EX90004-GHB-780 $3.32 $3.32 1 Honda NUT (10MM) for 2002 Honda TRX400EX90201-HA0-000 $4.04 $4.04 1 Honda WASHER, PLAIN (10MM) for 2002 Honda TRX400EX90453-KCY-670 $2.51 $2.51 2 Honda GASKET, EX. xtremef4i
Damn, Im suprised the website was more. I got a MC rebuild kit for my bike and got it 14 bucks cheaper and an oil seal for about a buck cheaper.
12oclocker
they'll give me 10% off, but after tax it will still come to over $60 on bolts, which I'm sure I could find somewhere else for less than 5 bucks.I remember I few years ago on a cr125 engine I was rebuilding, I was able to replace all the bolts with higher tensile strength, for less than 5 bucks, and it was gonna cost something like $45 at honda. problem is I've never seen bolts this long at any hardware store, I hope FastenAll might be able to get most of these. Moto-Brian
The bolts are not hardware grade bolts like you'd find at a hardware store for much less. They are specific and prone to stretching and are considered wearable items. It sucks, but honestly, a little more patience and knowledge and you'd save over $60. I'd pretty much have the guy who tried to help you go at LEAST halves...
xtremef4i
I went to www.carolinacycle.com and got these prices below (shipping not included). Only $2.11 cheaper than HPS of Troy but still pricey. I bought from Carolina Cycle last winter on a bunch of parts for a Ninja 250 project. I saved $40-50 after shipping compared to Vista Kawi in Kettering. But clearly, in this case, saving money isnt the end result. Kawi parts are cheaper. Looks like if Fastenall cant get what you need, you are going to have to suck it up and shell out the cash.6 Honda BOLT, FLANGE (6X35) for 2002 Honda TRX400EX90004-GHB-700 $2.48 $14.881 Honda BOLT, FLANGE (6X40) for 2002 Honda TRX400EX90004-GHB-710 $2.482 Honda BOLT, FLANGE (6X65) for 2002 Honda TRX400EX90004-GHB-760 $3.21 $6.42 3 Honda BOLT, FLANGE (6X118) for 2002 Honda TRX400EX90084-KCY-670 $5.44 $16.32 1 Honda BOLT, FLANGE (8X70) for 2002 Honda TRX400EX95701-08070-00 $1.041 Honda BOLT, FLANGE (6X70) for 2002 Honda TRX400EX90004-GHB-770 $3.30 1 Honda BOLT, FLANGE (6X75) for 2002 Honda TRX400EX90004-GHB-780 $3.23 1 Honda NUT (10MM) for 2002 Honda TRX400EX90201-HA0-000 $3.92 1 Honda WASHER, PLAIN (10MM) for 2002 Honda TRX400EX90453-KCY-670 $2.43 2 Honda GASKET, EX. xtremef4i
Another thing I just thought of. there is a thread on here about Cycle search and how they can get you the best deals on new and used parts. Might be worth seeing if they have a 400ex sitting around that you can get the hardwear cheap
12oclocker
the guy that over torqued the cylinder head bolts was the kid I bought the quad from a few years ago, I just decided to tear the engine top end down this year and do the valve guides cause they were leaking. I wish I could track him down though, lol! I had to take the jug and stuff to a machine shop in town, they're getting the broken threads out for me.The bolts are not hardware grade bolts like you'd find at a hardware store for much less. ReconRat
yeah, what Lizard1 said...Bolts and screws stretch when torqued. After torquing them two to four times, you need to get new ones anyway. They weaken, they can't help it, you torqued them. Mil-specs, aircraft rules. It's why most aircraft don't fall out of the sky. good rule for head bolts too. There is a lot of cheaters in hardware manufacturers now. The specs might not be too good. Buy from a good source. ReconRat
Download this Honda Common Service Manual and read chapter one.http://downloads.hondatech.info/Moto/Common/Honda_Common_Service_Manual.pdfHeadbolts are probably special USB class high tension hardware, and won't be cheap. They are not always marked on top, but there is an undercut under the head of the bolt, that no other bolt would have.Another clue is they have a wide rim like a built in washer, it's special for high tension applications. And they do stretch easy, and need replacing more often. And you're not the first person to snap off a headbolt. Welcome to the club.Steel bolts in aluminum engines get corroded and stuck, whoda thunk.

ReconRat
BTW, http://cheapcycleparts.com/ is also low priced and got the stuff. Servicehonda.com is about the same prices, but the shipping seems to be a bit higher. These are the two cheapest Honda sources I've found. I checked at least a dozen popular OEM parts websites. Oddly, bikebandit.com has mostly full retail prices on a lot of parts. Hence the bandit in their name? Dunno. They never have anything in stock anyway.
