Yeah, you have up to 10years after you leave the military to use your GI Bill... I got out of Active Duty Aug 2002!

I'm planning on milking every bit of that 26 or 30K (what ever it is these days) till it is gone!!!

How are you getting 1560, I only receive 1332 and that is the full active GI Bill?

if youre doing the national guard just for money the air force is the way to go. deployments are much shorter normally and its always a better place (read: normally not the front lines). i know probably 4 or 5 people right now down at rickenbacker and they have a ton of AFNG stuff going on there, not sure exactly what jobs but i know at least one is security forces if youre into that. security forces also can get slots for airborne school from the army sometimes. tell them you wont enlist until you get what you want. personally i dont like MPs much cause all they do is screw everyone else in the military, but hey, a lot of people are dumbasses and deserve to get busted, so if you have a superiority complex then by all means...

MP basic training though in the army is different than normal because they have an OSUT, one station unit training or whatever it is. you would be at fort leonard wood for all 18 or however many weeks it is.

Oops... you are right! I miss read my WAVE report (where you verify your attendance). It is $1321.00... but effective Aug 2009, The Post-9/11 Veterans Educational Assistance Act of 2008 will put the full-time amount at $3k. Benyen Soljax is right! The AF sends there members to better places for those in normal jobs. I was deployed to Kuwait and loved it, it was a great vacation and I made around 6K on that trip (TAX FREE).

Gi bill is for school, however if your like me, I was on active duty, got out and went reserves, so I get tuition reimbursement of almost 5000 per year, I also get 5000 a year for my employer, which in turn puts my 1332 back in my pocket. Cha Ching... lol

Oh fyi they screwed me outta my school date for 35F in jan.... Now I have to take the 37F course or lose my tuition benefits for not being MOS qual'ed. Its great, gotta love it. So now I guess I'll see you in Jan.

So, Air National Guard.....you can get into this and it is a division of National Guard, not the Air Force? Forgive my lack of knowledge. I want to know for sure.

I am going to be on my way here to meet with my recruiter and I am taking notes so I don't get lead down a death path.

I want this so bad, but it's got to worth it. My brother-in-law's brother is in the US Air Force. He is a cargo plane flyer. He has been in Italy for sometime. He loves it. He is single too. I know my husband is not ok with my interest in the National Guard. I am getting heat from all sides. I still really want to do this.

Yeah, like robhawk said, the GI Bill is for school, but my work pays for my classes, and then the GI bill money goes in my pocket! It works great! Even if my work didn't pay for it, the classes are only $550 each, so either way, you'll get some money to put into your pocket!

Mandova, yes the Air National Guard is a part of the Air Force, just like the Army National Guard is part of the Army... same thing, just different branch of the service. Of course your recruiter will talk you out of going into the Air National Guard, but that is his job. I would take everything he tells ya for a grain of salt... the recruiter told me that I couldn't get a guaranteed job as a Firefighter in the Air Force... I said thanks for your time and started to walk across the street to the Army recruiters office. He stopped me and said that he might be able to work something out for me, but I'd have to wait a few months before I can leave. I didn't care, as long as I went into the military with a guaranteed job!!

Air Gaurd.....22 years. choose a field that could do you some good on the outside!! I know some of the grunt may not want to hear this....but, most of my deployments were spent in Hotels, not tents (but believe me i've spent some time in tents and in the sandbox). try to stay away from anything that has civil engineering in the MOS.....usually means something like being a city worker (not that anything is wrong with that if that's what you want to do) i was an avionics specialist....worked on radios and radars...BKA pointy heads!! good bonus for specialist, longer schools, better deployments.

I like the 31B MP. Don't know if I am cut out for it? We'll see where I fit in, but I desire to get into something that will be good for long term also.

Air National Guard?....um, I don't know too much in that department.

I will ask recruiter to take me to the unit where I would be drilling. Thanks for bringing that up.

I only read your first post and then skipped the rest of the thread so if I am repeating some one I apologize.

I am an MP and I just got back from Iraq in June. If you can keep your mouth shut and do what you are told when you are told to do it you will be fine. The Drill Sergeants are there to make you succeed not fail.

If you want to know what being an MP is like, read the definition for the infantry and take out the marching. It's hardcore shit that will be the best time of your life.

"90% of the fighting forces in Iraq are doing MP missions." (General Petraeus, July 2008) if that puts things in perspective.

these are just ones that jump out at me. i haven't talked any of them over with recruiter, but that may be better anyway. i want to chose the ones i may like before he informs me of where i may or may not fit in best.

going to visit the akron/canton drilling location Saturday .

If your thinking about after/civilian jobs go Radiology. Plus that is a cake job in the Army. I had a buddy that was in Radiology and loved it.

I did radiology in the Air Force and enjoyed it. There are good job opportunities out there for it as well. I'd talk to the Air National Guard recruiter also and see what dates they have if that's the route you're taking. They each have their own schools for rad techs.

Signal Support deals with radios and communications such as SINGAR Radios (radios in the HUMMVS and such).

Yes, the Air Guard has recruiters just like the Army.

You pic your duty station based on your MOS in the Guard. It's not like Active Duty where your name goes into a pot and you end up where you end up. Depending on what you do you would probably be at Wright Paterson AFB in Dayton.

They will try and have you pic a duty station within 50 miles of your house (for safety reason) but, my First Sergeant lives in FL and flies to KY every month. lol It's all up to you really.

The time table is set for early Jan. enlistment. ASVAB test taken. "Quick score" of 75. The next step is to narrow my top four down to the one MOS, find an open spot, and finish the process.
