Wease
I'd like to hear about anywhere else people have stayed in the Caribbean as well. My wife, daughter, and I are going on a trip this summer, but we haven't decided on a cruise (5 day cruise out of Tampa to Cozumel and Cayman Islands) or some other Caribbean trip. I'm thinking really hard about going to Aruba. Great weather, hardly rains, not in the hurricane zone, casinos, lots of great diving, etc. I've been looking at a lot of hotels, then figured out if I took someone's timeshare week, that would save me literally almost half of what it would cost to stay in a hotel. A few of the hotels I've looked at have timeshares there, and some of the people with those timeshares can't use their week, so they rent them out cheap. Anyone been to Aruba, tell me anything good/bad about it (other than the Holloway case, I know about that), where to stay, what to see? coltboostin
Aruba is beautiful. There is a 1/4 mile track there, with a strong racing scene. And the whores are the cheapest-hottest little sluts you could imagine. $50 gets you a whole weekend of cooking, cleaning, and anything in between. 87GT
Wease Aruba is great. I stayed at La Cabana (sp?) resort. Had a hotel room on the first floor. So there was a sliding glass door to walk out into the back of the hotel. They had 4 propane grills out for everyone to use as soon as you got outside. Out a little bit more was their own pool. Out a bit more was a large bar. And out a tad more was the ocean. Worth the money! The air was always blowing, even at 3am. It was very comfortable. It did not rain that much when I was there. Just bright and or partly cloudy days around 75F. This was in December. There is plenty of things to see but you have to fit this in before/after happy hour. When I went there was 2 different happy hours. One was 2/3 at the bar at my hotel. The other was 3/4 at the bar that was on the beach. That one was but a few minute walk from the La Cabana. Happy hour = buy 1 drink get the same drink free. If you start walking up and down the roads from La Cabana you see mostly other resorts. There was some construction about 10 minutes away. They were building condos. The casino was down a bit more. It wasn't that big of one in my opinion. I didn't stay there that long when I went. No free drinks when you are gambling there. If you can rent a car (i suggest a yaris 4 door) you can drive to the grocery store. There is also a strip of stores towards downtown you can shop at. But I won't go into that. You want to drive to the grocery store. You MUST buy the meat they have there. Almost all is imported from Venezuela. It was the best steak, pork chops, ground beef I have ever had. See why I stayed at a place with grills in the "back yard" Check out their local beer they brew on the island. I think it was called Balshi? It tastes like a Heineken but much better. They also make a beer called Polar Ice. It is just a light beer that doesn't taste that good. Oh and they will not be 12 oz bottles/cans. It is all 8oz. I did happen to spot a bottle of real absinthe in the store. The other parts of the island have great picture taking spots. I can send you some of mine if you want to see them. Make sure you drive to both the east and west tips of the island if I remember correctly. There is a neat light house, an old missionary church, and perfect beaches. Lots and lots of beaches. If possible rent a 4wd vehicle. There are some trails that you can go driving through. There was this huge castle they had standing. They let you climb all through it. Also big waterfalls if you drive far enough. Great pictures... We also went scuba diving. There is a place where you can rent all the equipment. Going down and seeing the brightly colored fish is wonderful. Nothing else like it in the world. That maybe bias because underwater is the only time I see perfect without glasses on. The neatest thing about the island is it is filled with small lizards. They are everywhere. If I think more of the trip I will post it up. This was over 2 years ago. Wease
Well, I've made my decision and found what I think is a great deal. We'll be going to the Renaissance Resort & Casino, July 18 - 25. They have their own private island out in front of the resort! Found a woman who was renting her timeshare, 5th floor, ocean view, for $1200. If I was to rent a hotel room there, it would have cost me about $2800. That's the key with some of these places, not just Aruba. Find a timeshare that someone wants to rent out and take that instead of the hotel. You'll save a bundle. Plus I've got airline tickets lined up for $496. I think this is all a pretty good deal for this resort. And we have a friend who will dive certify us this summer, so we'll be doing some diving as well. Now I can't wait to go!
