Theoretically, it burns up before re-entry. Guess a blind squirrel finds a nut once in a while!

If it was made of space-grade metal and filled with ammonia, I doubt they figured it would burn up. They probably knew the odds that it would land in water.

I read an article the other day that they were expecting it to re-enter sometime late Sunday. They didn't anticipate that it would burn up completely but that since the earth was 2/3 water, it'd most likely not cause any damage.

 

To me, though, it did sound kind of irresponsible. In that same article, they stated that other space trash bound for re-entry was monitored and controlled so that it didn't hit anything. Sounds like they were pretty careless on this one.
