Obscured from his view an approaching train ploughed into the other side of the truck and pushed it right over him. When trains are pushing cars, and coasting down grade or through yards/switches/sidings etc, you hear very little of what you think you would hear. With the Engine at the opposite end of the train, you could hear the squeel of the metal wheel flanges on the rails if they weren't in gauge, flat spots on the wheels if they existed, or the slight hum of the roller bearings in the trucks. Given the fact he was already standing damn near on the one rail, with the train already approaching (regardless of where the truck was), he had no clue that train was coming anyhow. Now, add in industrial noises such as blast furnaces, or cranes, or trucks, etc, those small noises emitted from a rail car being pushed are now drowned out.
