The sound is synthesized. The Renault team issued a statement after the "singing engines" started hitting youtube that there is NO possible way for their engine to actually produce sounds like that.

Look at the rear rotors. They spin at the same rate the whole video, indicating the car was in gear. With all those rev changes, they should be spinning at different rates. And major changes in throttle on F1 cars are almost always accompanied by a fuel flash from the exhaust stubs, which never happens in the video, except during those bursts of WOT at the end. The video is of an idle test or diagnostic run, with synthesized sound added. The WOT bursts are real audio though, which is why they have a different tone quality.
