SpaceGhost
http://www.macrumors.com/2009/10/14/apple-modifies-boot-rom-on-revised-iphone-3gs-models-to-hinder-jailbreaking/ iClarified reports that Apple has apparently recently made a slight update to its shipping iPhone 3GS models, deploying an updated boot ROM that does not allow the exploit typically used to jailbreak the devices to be employed. The iBoot-359.3.2 started to ship last week. A screenshot posted by Mathieulh shows the new version number. MuscleNerd from the iPhone Dev-Team has confirmed that the loss of the 24kpwn exploit would mean a normal jailbreak would be impossible for the time being. While previous iPhone hardware and software updates have temporarily squashed jailbreaking tools, this apparently marks the first time that Apple has quietly changed the boot ROM on devices in production to address the issue. http://images.macrumors.com/article/2009/10/14/092547-revised_boot_rom_500.jpg Jailbreaking iPhones and iPod touches allows them to run applications and access features that have not been authorized by Apple, and has also allowed users to pirate iPhone applications. Recent data from mobile advertising firm Pinch Media reveals that it has seen nearly four million jailbroken devices on its ad network, with 38% of those using at least one pirated application. Among iPhone applications that have been cracked and made available for pirating, Pinch Media notes that about a third of the total installations of those applications are pirated copies. justinwebb
dev team is already working on it, they have gone this far with apple fixing each hole they find. Apple needs to hire these guys as they seem to find every weakness in the devices.
SpaceGhost
The point is Apple is being proactive in preventing this from happening now even in the boot ROM.

You would have to use a *gasp* "stock" phone and actually pay for apps and not steal. You thieves are no different than burglars. Thieves are thieves. Putty
Dev Teams will have it cracked just after the first shipment arrives. Apple thought 3.1 was untouchable. That and 3.1.2 has been cracked. But if you sell you can't JB a new one with the new boot rom. You would have to use a *gasp* "stock" phone and actually pay for apps and not steal. You thieves are no different than burglars. Thieves are thieves. I dont agree.
SpaceGhost
Charles, this is the Boot Rom not the OS, whole different animal. I'm agree though, the Dev Team will find another way.
Putty
Charles, this is the Boot Rom not the OS,. I was using the OS as an example. If Apple would listen to consumers and release just some of what jailbreaking has to offer, they probably wouldnt have to deal with this so much. The OEM phone is just so blah. Bam
i got a question....ignore me if its a dumb one.. but seeing as how popular jailbreaking the iphone is and stealing apps are seemingly very common, what are the chances that apple/gubment starts going after people similarly to downloading illegal music? i mean, i dont own apple anything so i'm not up to date on it, but its still pirating and theft, so what gives? or is this already being done? Putty
I think it's a very good question. Apple charges for the apps. All those same apps are free online, just like music. I guess it's possible.
