Hocking Hills/Old Mans Cave Ride Report

Today I rode my supermoto around Hocking Hills. This was the second trip I have taken there, both within 3 weeks.

So I started off leaving Baltimore headed south on 158. Went down through Lancaster and then proceeded east on US-33. Riding a supermoto on 33 is slow and boring. Got gas at a Sunoco just before 374 (a little over a gallon and half tank with 30-40mpg-ftl)

347 Ride Report

The beginning of 374 is kinda like 664 in that the turns aren't all that impressive and there are long straights. But a little while into the ride it begins to get good. With nice sharp turns and beautiful scenery I knew I was going to have a great ride. 374 had a few turns that were leaf covered and slippery. 374 looks like it had been repaved in recent years. Good blacktop, no gravel in the turns, and also with most turns being banked riding at a rather fast pace is almost effortless. There were a couple state parks along the way. Great if you are on a long ride and plan to ride 374 so make a midway stopping point (or just something to check out).

You can break Route 374 into four parts. From US-33 Route 374 heads south then ends into route 180. This section was slow to start with leaves in some turns. GREAT part of road with many turns.

To continue 374 make a right and start heading back west (SW i guess). This quick little jog has some nice long sweeping turns.

Then Route 374 picks back up on the left (180 continues straight). This is the section that has a state park on the left (within the first 4-5 turns). This is the longest stretch of 374 without stopping and BY FAR my favorite. Absolutely beautiful roads/scenery. I love riding roads where the trees cover the top of the road (block the sun). It just seems like your riding alone with no one else in the world, no cares, no where to be just riding like its meant to be. (imo) You can see most of hocking county just from this road. GREAT turns

The 4th part is where 374 intersects 664. You have to go north on 664 to pick up 374 on the right. Through this section you ride throught the whole hocking hills/old mans cave state park. Short section of road but still good rode. Alot of 30-40 mph turns (sharp)

On Route 374 there are NO AMENITIES (gas/food)

Route 374 has alot of elevation changes. Climbing/desending hills

Ride continued...

I picked up 664 from 374.

But i then went down 374 to route 56 (This is where i thought i got gas last time--i was wrong) Last time I got gas in Lauraville (180 and 56 intersection) I was tricked because where 664 ends into 56 there was a marathon gas station, but once you get up close to it you find out its closed/abandoned?...I was almost empty was FAAAR from Lauraville. I was going to hate life it I had to push my bike to get gas. I just barely made it to Lauraville (running on fumes it seemed)

Once i fueled at 180/56 i headed back up route 180 to pick up my favorite part of route 374 (section #3) for the second time. The third section ends into 664

Route 664 Ride Report

This is the second time I'm on 664 today. The part of 664 from route 374 to Old Mans cave is the good part. I stopped off at a local grocery/restaurant place and got a lil bite to eat. Got a sub--quality comparable to a "roach coach" (pre-made with nothing special) Like Route 374 on Route 664 there arent any places to get gas.

The roads were excellent quality. No gravel. Lots of tight turns with some sweeping turns in the mix. Nice elevation changes to have excellent views.

The part of 664 north of Old Mans cave is mostly straight with long sweeping turns being the only turns (1-2 sharp turns). Kind of boring stretch of road.

All and all it was a great ride. Beautiful weather, great scenery, no accidents, and no cops. Route 374 is now probably my second favorite road in ohio (#1 is 78)
