School me on AR-15s

Gas system is dirtier. The gas from the round travels down the barrel, up through a gas port (under the gas block) through the gas block, back through the gas tube, and presses against the gas key on the bolt; cycling the gun.

Piston system is cleaner. Gas travels down the barrel, up through the gas port, (I get a bit fuzzy at this point), into a gas block, at which point I believe it pushes on a piston, which drives a rod, which pushes on the bolt, cycling the gun. The dirty/carbon gas never reaches the bolt, thereby keeping the internals cleaner.

That's the quick and simple of the two. You'd have to shoot the ever-loving shit out of a gas gun, and never clean it, for it to give you issues. They work fine.

BTW, damn near any AR you buy these days will be sufficient. I can't really think of any 'bad ones'.

for knowing what you know, what would you recommend for me. I want something simple now but i want to be able to build/turn it into one of the guns ive listed above.

What's your budget?

I like the S&W M&Ps for basic, no-frills rifles.

Maybe something such as this. It's light, loaded up w/ MagPul goodies, and is easily upgradable.

I am not quite sure you know enough yet to recommend anything to. What is your end of the day goal on it? I see a budget, but what options do you really desire?

I'm starting to feel this way.

If you REALLY want to know what all is out there, you should stroll on over to arfcom or M4C.net and get to reading. All of this stuff is covered in detail. AR's are a very broad subject. As I said earlier, to put it all in one thread is damn near impossible.

That said, I'm always happy to help in any way I can.

-whatever brand you want. Pick one.

-Whatever brand/configuration you want. Pick one

-They're all basically the same. Pick your favorite rollmark and go with it.

-Barrels come in many varietys. Again, pick one.

Once again, do you want a lightweight battle rifle, or something to pop rabbits with, or something flashy to take to the range? Once you choose one of those three things, it will make selection easier.

One better:

Go back to the picture threads on those 2 sites, find the exact rifle you want, and PM the owner for specs. Then build it.

This is the chart the forum nuts swear by. Given this when it comes to the AR its very easy to choose to confuse yourself. Most of them are pretty well built, and in the end if you are are a prospective zombie hunter/civilian sheepdog none of these should ever really fail you under standard use. I picked up the S&W M&P15 MOE that is pictured above and like in immensely.

I also used to have a Del-Ton HBAR M4A3 style carbine that I liked very much as well. Keep in mind the platform is very modular so you can start off with a basic one and switch out whatever you want as time goes on! If you actually plan on carrying it around when the zombies come don't deck it out too much, it adds unnecessary weight and as previous poster says can be likened to those with chromed out spinner hubcaps and gigantic spoiler. Mine only has a sling, quad rail with forward grip and flashlight mount, and Eotech 517.

I prefer flat top with flip up sights as I don't care to play fair if SHTF and love the ease of use of the Eotech optics and can co-witness my MBUS if batteries die. If you plan on doing any optic modification I would recommend a flat top upper! In addition I like the convenience of a Chrome lined or Chrome Moly barrel, but its not absolutely necessary...

In terms of DI vs Piston system, at the time being I prefer the AK as my piston gun and the AR as a DI gun. There really is nothing wrong with DI if you preform regular maintenance, and the piston system does still get dirty (just away from the chamber and bolt carrier group, thus less likelihood of failure to eject and such) and extremely hot near the regulator in the front of the gun. I feel like its an unnecessary upgrade for the average joe citizen, but even if you still want it conversion kits are available! Noveske, arguably one of the best manufacturers of AR variants actually feels strongly against using the piston system: here is the article on that:

Here is a little rundown of an opinion of DI vs Piston:

Here, drive out to AIM and buy this:

http://www.aimsurplus.com/acatalog/DEL-TON_DTI-4_.223_5.56_Rifle.html

It's roughly half the price of a S&W. At this point, to build a rifle for that price you are buying used parts. Once you have that, feel free to add sites/optics, and tacticool it up however you want.

I think im going to save up and purchase one of their rifles. Ive heard a lot of great things their gun builds are sweet, lifetime warranty.

Mark LaRue is a douche and a half. Maybe 2 total douches, not sure.
