Sam1647545489
I have arp head bolts on my car now. Under high boost the heads lift off of the block and the coolant system gets pressurized and blows coolant out the over flow tank. Normal driving it is fine. No leaks no smoke. Now I think the arp heads bolts are allowing them to lift and was wondering if head studs would hold them down better. I am goin to check the block to make sure it is not warped. If it is straight should studs be my option to prevent this from happening. The same thing happened to the car with the previous owner. koolrayz
switch to L-19 (tool steel) head studs. No machining needed with this option. Other option is use 1/2" head studs. Pull some timing, add some octane, colder plugs. What do the plugs look like?

Dave1647545494
I lifted the head on my 2.3T like that. after I went to studs and mls gasket I had no more trouble
Guest Removed
studs do much better. i would say machine the block for 1/2" studs, but dont think you want to go that route just yet....
AJ
head studs use fine thread on nut part. the fine threads allow more torque to be applied and hold the head down better. so yes studs>bolts
Jeff1647545535
bolts stretch to pull the head down to the block. Studs draw the head down, are thicker, and have finer threads like already pointed out
schmuckingham
Ill be doing studs on the 86, without taking the heads off

Mattsv8
My 357 motor has head bolts. and has worked fine for me. but with the new block im going to undercut head studs for more clamping. i would think on a ford with 4 bolts per cyl u would want studs always
Guest Removed
low boost with 5 bolts is a far cry from high boost with 4 bolts
Mattsv8
At 9 lbs my 88 is proably moving more air than a smaller turbo at 15 or so. and im turnin it up to 20+ this season. thats high boost in my opinion for a 88mm and e85. koolrayz
1/2" A1 headstuds A1 > L19 True But L-19's cost twice what a regular ARP stud kit cost. A-1 tool steel studs cost twice what the Arp L-19 cost. Over 1K for stock diameter head studs (what I was quoted) is one hell of a lot of money. For the record A-1 also sells regular 8740 studs for the LS engines not just the tool steel studs.
Mattsv8
wow 1000 for head studs damn im runnin low 9s on bolts, i figure low 8s on regular studs, so when do i need the 1000 bolts 4s
koolrayz
Matt you have 5 bolt heads, it makes a HUGE difference. I found a set of the ARP L-19's on LS1Tech that were never used for $
