Nitrousbird
Then enlighten me, IS IT BAD ??? That is why I am asking. Very unreliable, installers that tend to be clueless, 8+ hour installs seem to almost be the norm, bandwidth issues when people are using multiple services at the same time, etc. A lot of people try them out just to leave soon after. AWW$HEEET
Interwebs is flaky through ATT Uverse, but its fast when it does work.
flyinbrian
This is do funny. I was talking to some people in the Charlottesville, Virginia area who also think Google is coming to there town. Brilliant way to drum up some attention Google. And to those who commented on AT&T's approach with U-Verse. I was an engineer for AT&T in Cbus for a while and also believe using copper is a huge mistake. FiOS>all. With that said, AT&T's new strategy is to supply fiber to the home in all NEW neighborhoods. Of course, there is a criteria on dark fibers available to feed the customers and so on, but at least it's a step in the right direction. If the economy was still booming as it was a few years back, Verizon was actually considering moving into competitor territory with FiOS. Especially those areas they border who are densely populated, (i.e., Franklin County, Ohio). Remember, it has been deregulated since 1996. Imagine that, you guys would be all on FiOS by now. It's far more of a reality than this Google nonsense.
87GT
U-verse is OK if you only get internet and do not pay for tv service. I have a friend that refuses to pay for cable and he has u-verse internet. His internet is ok but I still feel my RR Turbo is more reliable. He doesn't have enough bandwidth to watch an HD movie on his 360 via netflix using that party option where it is like MST3000 if he hosts it. But if I host the party he has no problems. BIGGU
i have never had any issues with my uverse in fact it blows away my insight and road runner. if any place gahanna has a good shot of getting google fiber optic lines as we have already laid our fiber across town. Nitrousbird
if any place gahanna has a good shot of getting google fiber optic lines as we have already laid our fiber across town. You aren't getting the issue. The cost of getting a large fiber run across town is nothing compared to the cost of getting it to 10's of thousands of individual homes. Nitrousbird
If they were going to do it here I'd dig up everything in the neighborhood for them my self You live in Upper Arlington = almost all aerial utilities. Why would you dig? Of course you have to pay lease fees monthly to AEP for every attachment you have to their poles, as most of the utility poles in Franklin County are owned by them. I'm sure that will be an even bigger incentive for Google.
flyinbrian
I saw this on my local news here in Virginia. Looks like Richmond, Va thinks they are in the running. They already have FiOS too!!! Greedy bastards. http://www.wtvr.com/videobeta/39513035-86ce-4b8e-b553-3364c52e586c/News/Google-In-Richmond If you read the trade publications, you will see how many cities are drooling over Google's offer. I still think it will end up fizzling out just as their wifi deal did in San Francisco a short while back. Read about the They quote The Wall Street Journal as saying in a city of 500,000, costs may be as much as $1500 per home. Another good read on the lack of details on this project still today- http://www.marketwatch.com/story/googles-fiber-experiment-details-still-scant-2010-03-16 According to the above article, Verizon claims to have already tested 1 Gig per sec to the home on FiOS, but have not yet seen a demand for it. Imagine that monthly rate? 100Gbps by 2030 according to this article. Interesting read on possibilities and what has already been tested. http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/news/2010/03/the-internet-of-tomorrow-100gbps-to-your-house-by-2030.ars

I know first hand the outside engineering/expense side of it and your point is good. Explain the other seven countries ahead of us that are not populated as dense as South Korea and Japan. Also, look at how much cheaper bandwidth is. You could also get into how our ISP's are private companies and other countries are government ran, (and monitored/policed/controlled). You could also get into how our ISP's are private companies and other countries are government ran, (and monitored/policed/controlled). This is my next argument. It is easier to get Fiber to everyone, if the Gov't offsets the cost. The problem with letting the Gov't offset the cost, is nothing is free. The Gov't wants their piece of the pie somehow. You could always go live in one of those other countries, and enjoy the 45-75% overall tax you are paying, per month. I honestly fear that is what this country will end up like.
