NEW ORLEANS -- At least three people have been shot along the Mardi Gras parade route in uptown New Orleans, and police say they have two people in custody.

It happened at St. Charles Avenue and 2nd Street just before 2 p.m., while truck parades continue to roll in the area.

New Orleans police spokesman Bob Young said at least some of the victims appear to be innocent bystanders. He said one of the victims was a woman on a parade-watching ladder who was shot in the leg.

The victims have been taken to a hospital, and there is no word yet on the extent of their injuries. Police said they do not believe any of the injuries are life-threatening.

The shootings happened along a busy stretch of the parade route uptown, while truck parades rolled following Rex -- the city's signature Mardi Gras parade -- on Tuesday afternoon. Young said several New Orleans police officers were nearby when the shootings happened, so officers were able to quickly catch the suspects.

A WDSU crew on the scene reported that the crime scene was on the opposite side of St. Charles Avenue where the parades were rolling.
