Forrest Gump 9
Anyone here have any experience with the PTR91? I'm looking to get one soon. They have good review and sound good on paper, but I would like to hear from people that have first hand experience. thank in advance. Scotty2Hotty
I haven't, but I have shot a German G3, basically what the H&K91/PTR-91 is now. The PTR-91 is made in the US, compared to the H&K91/G3 variant. I guess the company bought all the original tooling equipment to build these rifles in the US. They are heavy in comparison to other autoloading rifles, but I don't think you're headed to combat anytime soon. Other "features" I know about are the sights need a tool to adjust, its recoil is a bit stiff for some, and the charging handle is in an akward position if you have never fired this style of rifle before. I hear stick with JLD for their quality is top notch. Most the H&K equipment should work on it from what I hear, not to mention mags are pretty damn cheap in comparison. Doubt you'll find a range with one to shoot though. One in G3 furniture: http://tom.pebkac.us/ptr91b.jpg
RyM3rC
+1 on that. I have a Federal FA91 which is mostly the same, but the quality isn't what a JLD would be. It's expensive to shoot, is hard on brass, has a firm recoil, but is otherwise nice. They're very heavy, and the charging handle is very stiff, so not for smaller shooters. Cleaning is also a PITA, and depending on what brake/compensator you have on there, it can be painfully loud to shoot. It is a cheaper alternative to an M1a/FAL though, and the ergonomics are pretty decent. Every collection needs at least one.
cinergi
JLD knows how to make a rifle, it's improved over the HK variant. I sold a lot of them and only ever saw issues out of junk ammo. I only ever saw one flat failure and I know it was due to user ignorance. This was out of 60-75 that I ever laid hands on. Damn good rifle, I would have one I just chose M1a's instead. jjjxlr8
For about the same or a little less money, you can get a DSA built STG 58 (Austrian FAL). More accurate, and just as heavy! http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k239/jjjxlr8/stg58/P1010005.jpg http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k239/jjjxlr8/stg58/bipod.jpg

I am just not huge on the HK. It's a good gun, but just not for me.
jjjxlr8
The M1A is very nice, too, but quite a bit more expensive. http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k239/jjjxlr8/M1A/IMG_1150.jpg
Forrest Gump 9
Thanks for the replies. I like the M1a too, but after three shots with it I changed my mind. The recoil on the M1A is brutal. I hope the PTR91 is not like that.

Especially since they're both gas operated, and semi-auto, which is gonna soak up a little bit of recoil. Way different than comparing an AA-12 to a break-action 12ga. I hope the PTR91 is not like that. The PTR1 has much more felt recoil than the M1A. Neither is that bad, though. Maybe you weren't holding it correctly? It's not uncomfortable if you are holding it correctly. If you were holding it correctly, and you thought it had too much recoil, buy an AR15 instead. The 7.62x51 is a powerful cartridge! Will the recoil be less if the PTR91 I'm buying is shooting 7.62x39 round? That the one I'm looking at. I already have an AK47 (just bought one), and I want to be able to use the same armo on both gun.

Good idea going with a caliber you already have, too. Are you just looking for a different rifle in that caliber or have you already decided on the PTR1? Another very nice rifle in the 7.62x39 caliber is the Czech VZ58. Milled receiver, completely different firing mechanism, smaller and lighter (1 full pound!) than the AK47/AKM. Czechpoint USA sells nice examples. You can get them in several configurations including a very compact folding stock. Great, reliable shooters and highly underrated... http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k239/jjjxlr8/VZ%2058/IMG_0587.jpg http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k239/jjjxlr8/VZ%2058/P1010062.jpg Select fire examples in action... http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k239/jjjxlr8/VZ%2058/zalohy.jpg
Scotty2Hotty
The recoil on the M1A is brutal. You gotta tuck her in tight. Got to blast off 200 rounds through our EBR M14 couple weeks ago. You get a lil shoulder mark, but nothing to cry home about. The PTR-91 will probably be just as "brutal" if not maybe a hair stronger to you. Never really noticed it shooting the G3, but that's me. The PTR isn't much lighter and I would sure like to play a trick on you with a FAL.
Scotty2Hotty
Might want to set your sights on a 6.8 SPC AR, if you want something in a heavier caliber. Personally, there's plenty more rounds with more of a "kick" than .308. Hell the Barrett M107 that I had in Iraq, barely kicked harder than any bolt gun I've shot in .308.
