Berto
2-3k for a decent gas one. one that runs off natural gas 5-10k No way dude. Depends on what you want to do, Ben. If you are going to run sensitive electronics (computers) with it you should get an inverter style generator which has a more sensitive voltage regulator. In terms of how much power you need there are several websites out where that give you a ballpark on what you need depending on what you want to run. I personally bought a used craftsman 4400 watt generator (its portable) so I could use it at home or anywhere else. Its good enough to keep my TV on and my fridge. I paid $220 for it. I don't use it often either so it wasn't worth buying a new one. I haven't had it wired into the house because I won't be here much longer. when I need it I just run an extension chord.
