Ok, so. Like I said, I work at Philmont Scout Ranch in northern New Mexico. We drive around a lot in the back country. It's not ZOMG amazingly difficult four wheeling back there, but it can get a little hairy. We exclusively drive Chevys. We get a ridiculous deal through GM for Suburbans and 2500 HD trucks. Why drive Suburbans off a paved road and onto a 25 degree loose shale slope? Well, we've yet to find an 8 passenger vehicle with enough room for a litter and medic crew (mainly) that has good off-road capabilities for the price we can get. No, the roads don't require a 8 inch lift and 36's and you don't need a locking diff 90% of the time, thus, Suburbans work quite well.

To give you an idea of how much we drive back there, this May through August, we drove 356,312 miles with a total of 52 vehicles. The Ranch is only ~214 square miles.

Sadly, the few people that are allowed to drive in the backcountry can't all be perfect. We wrecked two 2010 Suburbans this year. One driver thought they could go 50mph over a water bar three feet tall and five feet wide. They bent the frame to about a 10 degree angle and left the better half of the front end impacted into the clay and gravel. The other wasn't paying attention when they were backing up a hill to let a Commissary truck (a GM TopKick stakebed filled with food and supplies) by. They ended up falling down the side of the mountain 50 feet till some nice Ponderosa Pines were kind enough to keep him from falling even farther.

The oddest accident yet though happened last week when a staffer was talking on a phone and driving. He ended up crashing into a tree branch. Just the branch.

The entire branch.

Sadly, I don't have a pic of the damage before the manifold was removed... It went through the grill and radiator before coming to rest there.
