What year of TDI? Service intervals vary by generation.

I would suggest browsing http://www.tdiclub.com, tons of info there.

Like most newer cars, the timing belt service is one of the more important and costly. Fluid change records and what fluids have been used is a good inquiry as well.

With the ALH motors, keep an eye on the timing belt service, records of intake cleanings or if the EGR has been removed or disabled. The early ALH motors had a belt that was recommended to be changed at 60K, most of the OEM belts are now rated for 100K intervals.

If there is no record of intake cleanings, pull the hose to see how sooted up the intake it, it will be an easy visual verification.

General chassis, bushings going out of the rear axle beam at higher mileage and the strut bearings on the front.
