13,000 MPH.

My question is, does it reach 13,000 mph as a maximum speed or is this its cruising speed once it's leveled off? It could easily reach 13k MPH when it reaches low Earth orbit, but to maintain that speed after reentry would be amazing. Also, the 3rd iteration of the test vehicle has inlets for jet engines. It would have to be a pretty advanced engine to operate while traveling that speed.

Yeah, that seemed fairly obvious to me. Scramjets have been talked about for a long time, but haven't gone very far. But from the slide they showed of the HTV-3X (apparently a cancelled version that was to be the next iteration) says it's a turbo Ramjet, which wouldn't be a scramjet and is surprising to me.

Hypersonic flight, rocket booster propels it to supersonic speeds before the engines fire, this thing has all the makings of a scramjet. I would love to see one finally work.
