Scotty2Hotty
Build your own if you want to save a little $$$. Cheap and AR-15 aren't words that can normally be associated with each other. No sense in buying a sub-par AR-15 to save a couple hundred. My "cheap" AR I'm piecing together has about $850 in it.

If you want a cheap AR, get a bushmaster carbon 15 for $650 or you can spend alot more and get a LWRC

At that price point you can get a cmmg, PSA, homebuild, or any other potentially functional metal machine.
wnaplay1647545503
My buddy picked up a dpms(I believe) from the westland mall gun show for $450 and couldnt be happier about it. I assume its not a huge namebrand but I believe its made in Ohio. He has a few thousand rounds through it and hasnt had any issues.

DPMS is a major brand, and in my experience is just fine for a hobby shooter. $450 is a pretty solid deal. I remember when you could build an AR for $450 about 5 years ago, it's a whole different market now.

I am thinking about picking up a LMT defender 16, but I am tempted just to build one from scratch. Any suggestions? BTW, my fiance gets the police/military disocunt at vances, so the LMT would be heavily discounted.

jjjxlr8
I'm not sure what your budget is, or if you want something a little unusual, but I've got an Armalite AR180 (SA version of AR-18) from the early 70's that I'm thinking about parting with. It's a Eugene Stoner design from 1963 and has some interesting features: short stroke piston type gas system (rather than direct impingement) - bolt and carrier stay cleaner and cooler hard chrome bolt fabricated steel receiver - simple and strong dual springs & guide rods for the bolt carrier unusual quick-release scope mount system with a 4x20 optic side-folding stock that latches in the folded position http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k239/jjjxlr8/Firearms/AR180/th_IMG_2304.jpg http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k239/jjjxlr8/Firearms/AR180/th_IMG_2303.jpg http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k239/jjjxlr8/Firearms/AR180/th_IMG_2307.jpg http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k239/jjjxlr8/Firearms/AR180/th_IMG_2306.jpg http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k239/jjjxlr8/Firearms/AR180/th_IMG_2305.jpg
