Patterson
Of all the motors I've destroyed over years, this was likely the least exciting when it went. It took a dump on the first pass at IFO in August. Did a little poking around here and there to diagnose it, then finally pulled the head today, At the track. 2 or 3 quarts everywhere... http://i523.photobucket.com/albums/w351/Pats16Valve/IMAG0070.jpg http://i523.photobucket.com/albums/w351/Pats16Valve/IMAG0179.jpg http://i523.photobucket.com/albums/w351/Pats16Valve/IMAG0180.jpg http://i523.photobucket.com/albums/w351/Pats16Valve/IMAG0190.jpg http://i523.photobucket.com/albums/w351/Pats16Valve/IMAG0189.jpg So back in will go another junkyard short block, I'll clean up the chamber a bit and play with a new heat rejection coating I ordered in for combustion chambers, and the camshafts. Yay me.
Xyster101
Pardon my ignorance, but what caused the failure?
Patterson
Judging how the chunk that is missing from the piston is smeared into the cylinder wall, I'd say it detonated and melted. Luckily it didn't damage the valves and seats.
Drewhop
I see a pattern forming. I cant quite put my finger on it.

Patterson
In it's own defense this motor has been whored out more than Phil in county lock up. It's earned a break. And I haven't exactly been gentle. In the Summit it made 380+whp for 5 years, and the tuner ran this motor in his 1G before that at 450+whp for years. Bone stock other than BSE kit, and ARP head studs, junkyard head. If there was a pattern would be they'll take a ton of abuse, and make power. And gloriously take a exit. Dr. Apex
I can assure you those are some of the toughest 4cyl's you'll ever find, but if you mistreat one like any motor it won't last. I've seen people drive them daily making 400+hp all the time. Shit like this can happen.

Patterson
Ouch. You coming to get my motor then soon? Yep, need to get some parts finished, and picked up for dollars. I was laughing when the head came off, the wife wasn't. She forgets that I really don't care if I hurt it or not.
