Me = Satisfied Customer: The Orion Build

So as some of the senior members may have seen, DJ (Orion) recently built me a computer. To those who didn't know, and are into cool desktop PCs (Mac crowd GTFO), DJ is a great option. I decided to stop buying retail PC's and laptops after 2 consecutive disasters with HP.

I posted here about getting info on a new build and DJ contacted me immediately. I'd known him from his days working at Verizon where he also got me some good phone deals, so I was comfortable working with him from the start. He sent over a "portfolio" of sorts, showing off his work and offering a way-over-the-top option that he'd already built but it was out of my price range. Still, I was impressed with his ability to build a ridiculous machine, and it gave me more confidence in hearing how genuinely excited he was at the prospect of building another machine, although slightly more budget friendly.

If you want the specs of the machine, I'll let DJ chime in with it or you can find his thread on it in the Senior Members Area.

Anyways, we went back and forth on what we were going to use for a few weeks. DJ gave me a number of options and let me know how any particular configuration could be modified to save money (i.e. using AMD and going with a basic HDD, both options I exercised).

Once we agreed on everything, I stopped by his work last Tuesday to go over the order and all specs, give him money with which to purchase the awesomeness, and set up a time to build the damn thing. Clicked "confirm order" on Tuesday night, and UPS had it at his office Friday.

Friday night we met back at his work with a rich bounty of computer parts, rockin' tunes, and delicious fast food. The case we ordered had a broken bit to it but instead of sending it back and waiting, Gorilla Glue solves everything. Next step was unboxing everything, laying it out, harvesting the DVD drive from my old tower, and getting to work.

An aside here; I built my old tower myself. It was a super-budget build, only about $500, and it sucks. I know nothing about building computers properly, so there's dust everywhere and wires look like a tangled mass of horror.

In this new build, while he worked DJ was very methodical and pointed out every little thing he did. I can firmly say that I am a terrible teacher and when I'm doing something that requires my concentration I'm completely incapable of talking to people. I doubt I'd be able to do everything he did perfectly, but hearing him talk about little steps like tips on where to put each drive and how best to hide the wires showed me that he takes pride in his work.

Once everything was put together, we hooked up to a monitor for the most difficult and treacherous part of the build; pressing the I/0 button for the first time. It worked! Probably due to the fact that it's a simple build, but things never work that easily. We spent about 30 minutes setting up the machine, packed up all our stuff, and I was on my way home to apply all new Windows updates. To give you perspective on my expectations, I figured it'd be about 2 hours to download and install everything. It finished in 40 minutes.

Needless to say, I'm incredibly happy with money well spent and anyone considering a customer PC build should contact DJ. He's easy to work with, and if you're not an expert on such things he's an invaluable resource in terms of product knowledge that'll get you a good system. He saved me a lot of money, headaches, and countless hours I would've had to spend researching each component that went into my PC.

:megusta:

For the teal deer crew:

-DJ, MOTHAFUCKA, DO YOU CONSULT HIM?

-He gon' save you $$$ on a badass PC

-He looks like Silent Bob

As a system builder myself, i don't see the hype. Sry to rain on your parade. Glad he got you situated though.

As a salesman, I know more than anyone that a good review is hard to come by. Its as much about doing DJ a big favor since he did one for me.

Jeff is just being honest.

To a guy who knows what he's doing, it really isn't a big deal. To a regular guy like Alex who was just looking to have a little something nice without having to go through HP/Dell/any other large manufacturer, it is.

It wasn't a big deal to Tinman or Derek whenever they did some work on my car for me, but it sure as hell was to me.

P.S. Ask Jeffro to show you his Jerry rigged computer ventilation system. Good shit. :)
