Detroit

Going to Detroit next weekend for a work deal at Ren Cen and Milford. We're staying at the Marriott in the Ren Cen and will have some free time in the evenings. I know Detroit can be rough in the wrong areas but was looking for some input on where to avoid and what can be a good time. Going with three guys that I work with but want to avoid getting arrested or mugged.

You won't get arrested. There aren't enough cops around to deal with everything down there. If you are staying downtown, stick to the area around Comerica Park (IF there's a baseball game), or Greektown. I would probably aviod walking around anywhere else after dark.

You could take a people mover from the RenCen to a few places, but you'll be riding that at your own risk. It's probably fine to ride, but I haven't been around there in a while.

ROFL at the ppl mover was just going to suggest that but the possibility of rape is ever present.

I have actually been shocked at a few places.

One particular bar in general looked like a total shit hole on the outside. walked in oak and cherry EVERYWHERE warsteiner hobgoblin rouge all on tap and I was in heaven. Nice quiet and not to pricey sorry cant remember it.

it was near the shelter (concert hall not a homeless shelter)

cant remember the name tho.

Passport necessary or will some other form of id work?

Passport is completely necessary, if things are anything like they were a few years ago. There was no problem getting into Canada - the issue was getting back into the United States. No passport? Stay in U.S.

P.S. I was in Detroit about a month ago for a weekend. First night stayed downtown at the Greektown casino hotel. There are plenty of bars, etc. to go to down there and things didn't look too sketchy (though just driving into downtown Detroit gives you seasonal affective disorder). The casino itself is meh and I was annoyed by the fact that it wreaks of cigarette smoke. Apparently, you can still smoke in there. When you leave, you will wreak of smoke. If you smoke, awesome; if you don't, prepare yourself.

Yeah, I think you can still smoke in casino's, but the bars/restaurants are smoke free. There are things to do in Detroit, but they're not all in the same area and I'm not too familiar with all of them. Popular places to eat are Slow's BBQ, Mexican Town, El Barzon (Mexican-Italian), Greektown (Pegasus and one other that I forget the name of are the most popular), and probably more I'm forgetting.

For bars, there are some places in the city, but a lot of the people in the area go to places like Royal Oak, Ferndale, Novi, and Rochester. You could always just head to Woodward and ~12-13 Mile Rd's if the weather is nice. People are always gathering around there at night.
