What factors do you consider when purchasing automotive and racing apparel?

Cost, relevance to my interests, color of clothing, style of clothing (really like mechanic shirts [think Dickies])

Graphics; the design shouldn't require words to speak for it

 

What do you like or dislike about automotive and racing apparel currently on the market?

Overdone/overly busy designs, overused sayings, overpriced (sometimes), too much pop culture influence

A shift to sleek, functional, eternally relevant design

Fit, Design and Prices. I'll pay more for something that fits me good. Nothing I hate more than buying an XL or XXL, only to find out it's wider, rather than taller

A good mix of both. Graphics are nice, when done in moderation.

 

What do you like or dislike about automotive and racing apparel currently on the market?

Prices and sizes primarily. Design's seem to be a little over the top in most instances. The other thing that roasts me is the shirts that are very thin. I want a shit I can wear all the time, and wash every single time and it doesn't feel like it's going to fall apart. So, in short, overall quality.

 

What would you like to see improved on in the current offerings for automotive and racing apparel?

A wider variety (figuratively speaking) of sizes and fits. As well as some more straightforward designs. It may just be that I have a weird taste for some things, but these t-shirts for some events with all sorts of graphics around a car and shit drives me bonkers.

 

What is the price range would you pay for automotive or racing apparel?

Depends on the design really. For a shirt I really like and want that seems to actually be worth a damn as far as quality goes, $25-$35 tops.

I am in the beginning stages of starting a small apparel company. This will be a company that is geared towards the automotive/racing market. Below I have some basic market research questions that I would appreciate some serious answers to.

 

What factors do you consider when purchasing automotive and racing apparel?

On the rare case I buy something car related to wear rather then install on a car, it needs to look nice and not be some loud graphic tee shirt, be something classy on a comforatable fitting article of clothing. I don't like cheap tee shirts.

Do you like shirts that are more graphics based, or saying based?

Mild graphics are cool, sayings that I could wear without looking like some grove city derelict would be cool too.

What do you like or dislike about automotive and racing apparel currently on the market?

I don't like cheapo tee shirts, corny hats, and shit that looks fresh out of a souvenier stand.

What would you like to see improved on in the current offerings for automotive and racing apparel?

button up shirts, or sports jerseys

What is the price range would you pay for automotive or racing apparel?

Realistically if it looked cool, was comforatble to wear, and did not stick out like a sore thumb $50-80, maybe more depending.

 

Needs to involve ghost flames and chrome and some witty phrase like "hold my trophy while I kiss your girlfriend" (my favorite shirt to wear karting as a teenager) and I'd gladly by something.

Well the biggest thing I am seeing here is the lack of a quality product needs addressed. It also seems the "ken block" style needs to be avoided as well.

 

What about just black shirt, whit letters on the front with different sayings?

Avoid the black shirt, solely white letters idea, as anyone can do that and there's nothing that comes close to making your product definitive.

 

A more mature design needs to be implemented, but those you listed almost seem too conservative to me. It's really tough to get the right mix of design and conservation.

 

Depending on which route you want to take with the company, it might be a consideration to put some time in and write a back story to a novelistic speed shop, then sell products similar to this:

One of the biggest things to remember is association is key: people LOVE to be walking billboards for just about anything. If you can come up with a product of your own that fulfills people's need to advertise, most of the battle's already won.
