Deep Forest Raceway (Gran Turismo) Possibly Based on Abandoned Iowa Racetrack?

The Jalopnik article states it all, definitely a cool read, and interesting to compare the layouts of the real and fictional tracks, especially their elevation changes. Makes me want to get a used PS3 now for GT5 so I can play that track again, one of my childhood favorites by far.

That was the track I discovered the 90 degree flipping limit way back in GT1. Fun times. Looks like it would be fun to take a rally car or baja type truck around that dilapidated track.

A rally car through that little track would be awesome. Actually, at 3.2 miles long, it'd be one heck of a rallycross track if no one bothered to fix the tarmac surface, put some proper grandstands up, and address safety for drivers and fans.

Uh, I've been to Iowa many times and theres nothing but corn there......I call BS!! :)

Lots and lots of corn in Iowa, although there are definitely some woods-y areas around!

Well that's an interesting thought. It looks pretty tight in the woods there, but there is already plenty of machinery on hand to fix that problem.

I'd hope that someone from Phylony Digital, or just an enthusiast with deep pockets will take some time to at least restore the surface and make it driveable. From what the comments on Jalopnik said, the surface wasn't strong enough for the original Trans Am cars with their massive tires and torque, so it'd probably need to be all ripped up, hugely resurfaced underneath, and repaved; worth it though, in my opinion.

It would be neat if it turned out it were modeled after that track, wonder if they had been milling about on google maps and stumbled onto it and decided since it was long closed and abandoned they could just copy the layout?

That's what I was thinking, or maybe someone on the developers' team knew it existed and decided to take a look at it. The layouts are nearly identical in terms of elevation change, but the real track is 1 mile longer, so I'm assuming they took some cues from the original, if they knew it existed

There are hundreds of "ghost tracks" around the country. Check out the series by "Pete Hylton" called "Ghost Tracks". He has two books on road race courses and one on speedways (ovals). Excerpts from the books were published in SportsCar magazine over the past few years. Great reading.

I had made a pretty sweet thread based on a Speedhunters article about this one ghost track in England...cool shit

I especially love the story of Virginia International Raceway which was reopened in 2000 after spending over 20 years as a deserted track

Here's an onboard lap of the dilapidated circuit before it was renovated some 15 years ago

The USA has more racetracks (in use and not in use) than most of the rest of world combined has....... It's pretty crazy
