Humidors

So I bought one of my humidors on sale (online) from famous smoke last winter. For the price it appears to be a pretty decent quality glass top humidor, holds 50 or so. I prepped it properly, even re-calibrated the junk analog hygrometer it came with, but the cigars seem to dry out a lot faster than they did in my old humidor (which was a small bare bones cheapo from Tinder Box).

I'm recharging the humidifier every few days even though the hygrometer stays pretty constant, it has always read between 68 and 75 (which I'm sure isn't very accurate) but even when it reads high, the new cigars I'm putting in seem a bit overly dry/firm after just 3-4 days in the humidor. It has been this way ever since I bought it, even after re-prepping and trying whatever other tips I found online.

So am I a complete idiot, or is it just a junk humidor? Where should I buy one at? I'm not looking to spend much.

How long did it take you to stabilize it? I hope more then a day or 2....

I always wiped mine down w/ Distilled Water, and kept gel beads topped off w/ distilled water as well. Also, get a quality hygrometer.

PS - Once you are done screwing around with humidors, look into Pipes ;)

The first time I wiped it down and waited 3 days, refilling the humidifier each day. The second time (several months later) when it was empty I waited 2 days with a shot glass full of distilled water sitting inside it.

The humidor itself seems fine, the seal and everything is good as far as I can tell. Like you pointed out, I think the next step is a quality hygrometer and possibly some beads.

Buy distilled water

get a clean rag

douse rag in water

wring rag out

wipe down inside of humidor

Take a bowl

add 4 ounces of distilled water

put in microwave for 40 seconds

put bowl in humidor

let humidor sit for 1 week

take bowl out

add sticks (cigars)

go to governors smoke shop in westerville

buy digital hygrometer

buy water crystal/gel humidification stuff

put both inside humidor

END HASSLE

if that doesnt work then you need to buy oderless caulk and seal the glass pane where it meets the wood. Better yet, sell that humidor and buy one without a glass top.

For reference, this is what I have. The tiny one on the right always served me well, but the bigger one has been a bit of a pain

As bob said above, take I appart and caulk it in. Also get humidification beads and never worry as long as you keep them charged. Links below.

I would get a small humidor like he posted above. You can find them with a cigar sampler for around $25.

Or get a mason jar or something air tight and put them in there with a water pillow or beads. If you plan to keep them for months without smoking I would get a small humidor though

I smoke infrequently and I don't see the point in someone who smokes like I do in buying a humidor. Every few months when I want a cigar I go buy one.

The only small problem is when I have people over sometimes I will buy a few for others and if they don't get smoked then they might sit.
