Robochan
Hello i really want to change the look of my wheels but not sure how. I have 01 miata chrome 16" wheels with my summer tires on them and want to paint them before i put them on the car. http://www.originalwheels.com/mazda-wheels/images/mazda-mx-5miata-rims-64836b-b.jpg The color i want is something along the lines of a copper/orange/gold color. Inspiration originally from these crazy forgeline wheels but obviously not very doable in my case as i dont think i can polish them then put a clear/copper on them. http://www.forgeline.com/product_images/product_photo-xlarge_image-654.jpg I did find this on the dipyourcar website which i believe is a black base with the copper metalixzer on top but not really the shine i want. http://www.dipyourcar.com/skin/common_files/IMAGES/Color%20Examples/copper%20metalizer.jpg I do have some cheaper spray guns and a compressor capable of 8cfm@40psi but im not sure what paint or where to buy it. I want to do this myself correctly and look pretty professional. Can anyone help guide me, maybe educate me on paints or if aerosols is an option? Thanks! POS VETT
Painting or powdercoating a chrome-plated surface may prove to be challenging. I'm unsure whether you can electroplate copper onto chrome without some kind of corrosive effect in the long run. I've entertained the idea of copper-plating a set of polished CCW. Now, are you sure the wheel is chrome-plated instead of polished?
Robochan
Well after some reading it seems like they are polished and not chrome but i may be wrong. They are OEM 01 SE wheels. http://www.originalwheels.com/ says "Buff Finish"
Cordell
You would get much better results starting with a wheel that's not chrome. I have never seen good results of doing anything to a chrome wheel without striping first. I think you'd be wasting your time, and get much better value to start with different wheels. Besides you can find decent wheels to fit a Miata, either new or used, for a good price. The Konigs on my Miata are not the greatest, but I only have $400 in them new. Start with something like that and have them finished in any color you want. It'll turn out properly, and last much longer then something over chrome. Anyway you'll figure something out.

I would love to do 15x9s like 949 or TR motorsports but between buying the wheels and new rubber i just dosent make sense currently.
