Well, if you don't wreck all that safety equipment is just added weight, right? I guess that's one way of looking at it. None of the safety equipment is needed until you wreck. A well designed cage actually adds to the structure of the chassis and helps with the way the car works. Seems the newer cars are built more rigid and require less cage to make the chassis work.
