Experience with 4Runners?

So I am looking at a 3rd Gen 4Runner it has 198k on the clock looks clean from what I can see in the dealers pics and has pretty good interior. Now I have seen these things reach 3 and sometimes 400k. The guy wants $3k for it and it will strictly be a winter/Hunting beater car so not many miles will be put on it. SO question is have any of you had experience with these, is it worth it for a beater or should I look elsewhere?

3rd gen 4runner's are great vehicles. I've seen some with 400k miles.

Some of the issues I've seen is "pink coolant" where the lower transcooler corrodes and leaks into the coolant. Therefore putting coolant in the transmission.

Rear axle seals leaking

Lower ball joint failures (typically owners let them go so long they break and the wheel flops out while driving.

Yeah I panned on checking the pink coolant problem that was the first problem that I pulled up about them. Main thing really is id like to get through a couple winters before dumping money into it. After that I dont care ill pull the motor and rebuild if I have too since the Mazda will be my dd in nucer months.

I picked one up on here in may, a 97 with 206k on it. I paid $1200 for it with a blown head gasket (common issue), one bottle of bars stop leak and 4 thousand miles later she's running Strong.

If its pre 99 look for sagging rear springs, they all did, and an updated spring was released. Cheap fix.

Nice well maybe ill pick this one up depending on how she looks when I get there, we all know pictures can be deceiving sometimes. Like I said for a 96 it looks great, little rust on the rear bumper but a replacement or even an off-road bumper is a cheap fix.
