ImUrOBGYN
One of my old PS3s took a dump and I'm looking to still use the HD within. As the title says, I would like to get an inexpensive enclosure for the harddrive. It's a laptop HD so should use a 2.5. This will primarily be a backup device for my laptop which does have an eSATA connection. Any related recommendations or thoughts would be appreciated. Thank you. gillbot
USB work ok? If so I have a crappy ebay one i'll send you for the cost of shipping. I'd guess $2 or so in a bubble mailer. It's like this one: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Generic-2-5-inch-USB-2-0-SATA-HDD-Enclosure-case-Hard-Drive-Disc-External-DX-/261676913141?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3ced28d1f5

Anyone know long would it take to backup, say 2-300g only using USB compared to an eSATA connection?
jeffro
I have ths one. Its been pretty good to me so far. Its nice because it deosnt require an external power source like some enclosures. http://www.microcenter.com/product/398004/25_SuperSpeed_USB_30_to_SATA_Portable_External_Hard_Drive_Enclosure You said 2.5" right? Like a laptop drive? 300gb would take hours over USB though.

I keep all my videos and music on one and it's not that big of a deal to back up, plus there's enough space that I don't need to keep swapping files around, I just keep adding to the library. If you want mine, let me know. All it'd take is the cost of postage and i'll mail it to ya. I have several others so i'm not using this one any more. ImUrOBGYN
Found this: http://www.microcenter.com/product/357189/NexStar_CX_25_SATA_to_USB_20-eSATA_Portable_External_Hard_Drive_Enclosure Little more expensive (still pretty cheap, though) but it supports USB 2.0 and eSATA of which I have both. I'm really leaning towards the eSATA. Hell, it's even faster than firewire. Hard to pass up its speed. After some quick research: eSATA = upto 3Gb/s USB 2.0 = upto 480Mb/s
gillbot
Can't argue against more speed, some are willing to sacrifice because cheap.
gillbot
Have you seen this? http://slickdeals.net/f/3701794-trade-in-your-broken-ps3-and-upgrade-to-the-latest-factory-re-certified-playstation-3-160gb-model-for-99-ymmv-based-on-your-ps3-model I traded in an old fat that died. As long as it's complete, they don't care. Mine was taped together, hdd was the wrong size and also dead plus it had been"repaired" numerous times. No hassle given. If my other fat dies I'm doing the same thing with it assuming the deal is still good.

It's one the fatties we've had for like 8yrs total. I mean this thing is heavily used; everyday use. Anyway, I just don't feel like repairing it again or paying 100 bucks when that could go to a ps4 later. We do have another ps3 slim we bought when the old one died before I had a chance to attempt the repair so we're not without some gaming/entertainment streaming, etc. I think I'll pick up that HD enclosure today and pull the bluray laser while I'm at it. Should provide some good blue laser fun.

ImUrOBGYN
Ye3ah, it's still pretty tempting but given we have another one in the living room and would like a ps4, it's hard to justify. I needed a new backup drive and a blue laser to burn things with, anyway.
