So...let me get this straight:

-lightweight sports car from Toyota.

-RWD, 6-speed manual.

-Should be well under $20k to start.

...AAAND it might be coming to America?

Miata-bros? Toyobaru-bros? AutoX-bros? Is anyone noticing the news around this thing???

Horsepower sells, but if something this pure, fun, and cheap were to be sold in the U.S., I think it would sell 100k of them a year.

I'm digging the whole thing because it's such a simple, uncluttered design. It's not feminine, but also not aggressive. It's fish-mouth in it's own sense of personality (or lack of it).

I haven't even seen the interior, but as long as it has an A/C and possibly cruise control option - and a radio - I'd be good with it.

I drive 138hp in a 3100lb convertible and I make it where I need to go ahead of everyone else just fine. :D

EDIT: NOT SAYING I'D BUY ONE...so don't go start with the "Clay review" stuff again...

2160 lbs would be fun, but after they pile on all the crap for murican markets will need better brakes, rubber, more power, etc. to retain decent performance

Still, cheap lightweight rwd manual cars are good, if people actually buy them

the issue I have is....doesn't toyota already have a car like this? the FRS? What does this do that the FRS doesn't besides potentially cost less than $20k?

All I could see this doing here in the US is eat the ass out of the FRS sales market to the point where it isn't profitable for toyota to bring in either, and then they cancel making cheap sports cars and go back to trying to convince us highlanders are something we want in super deluxe $40K hybrid models. oh and selling us $80K land cruisers -they are great at that too.

I don't see there being a use for this car in the US other than a novelty for a year or so and eventually convincing toyota can't sell cheap sports cars in the US market and go back to developing a $75K supra.

I would rather Toyota/subaru create a "track mule edition" FRS where they strip out the back seats, the standard back up camera, and other crap to get the price from $26K to $19K and sell that instead.

As far as the looks? I kind of like it. reminds me of some of the eggcrate fishmouths from 50's british sports cars like the AC Ace coupe and the austin Healey 100 Coupe

The name is dumb and the front grill is ugly. This thing won't sell enough for Toyota to justify keeping it around long, and will hurt FR-S sales. Who would buy this over <insert car here>? Only sports car guys looking for a Miata would be interested, and that's a very niche market.

I like Toyota having the balls to try something new and add some spark into the car scene, but I can't see this as anything other than a failure.

130-150hp

It looks like a kei car, I'm guessing standard 70hp 600cc engine for Japan, if it comes to the US it'll be a 1000cc, 110hp at the absolute top end of possible. Then everyone will complain that it's too slow and expensive and will sell in CR-Z numbers, which is to say, complete shit.

It'll be along the size of a kei-car... Miata or Mini Cooper competitor. A couple people here keep mentioning it'll be classed like an FR-S, but they don't realize how small and compact this car is supposed to be.

"A wheelbase of 97.6 inches puts the S-FR about midway between Toyota’s current compact rear-drive sports coupe, the Scion FR-S (101.2 inches), and the Mazda Miata (90.9 inches). So, too, does the concept’s overall length of 157 inches, which is 10 inches shorter than the FR-S and three inches longer than the Mazda. At 66.7 inches wide, the Toyota is narrower than both cars, and it’s also taller, at 52 inches."

They've already said a Toyota 2NR-FE 1.5l with 130hp/109tq paired with a 6spd and I pray an LSD. Suspension likely McPherson, but independent would be fantastic.

I really dig the other Toyota concept car. The Toyota Kikai.

Not as many pics in this article as I've seen in some others, but I'm kinda in a rush. Anyway, I don't just think the car itself is cool, but the actual "concept".

A sporty car in that price range would actually sell, rather than have limited production numbers. It will always be good to have a manual rear wheel drive car in a lower price range for used car/aftermarket parts options. This is a good thing.

If it sells well, other manufacturers will realize there is a market for this and produce something similar (I hope). Lightweight and cheap is what the Mustang/Camaro USED to be, and I'm happy to see more options than the Miata.
