unfunnyryan
I was bored and browsing a tiny LGS here, listening to all the racist banter about Hillary when I came across this at a great price. Taurus PT1911 AR http://i.imgur.com/KPkAaMgl.jpg So where do I being polishing a turd. I've already started with some simple work, like a rough polish of some bits like the outside of the chamber to try to get a mirror finish as opposed to the matte in the above picture, as well as the feed ramps which immediately made ammo chamber a LOT better. Now that I've done some free work, where should I start with parts/what are the must haves? What can I do to smooth out the main spring? I've begun looking at springs, guide rods, buffers, etc. Which of these parts make the biggest difference? Also I've read the Taurus mags are the weakpoint of these guns. I had zero failures with 100rds, but may replace them down the road.
Dammit Charlie
Mags (McCormick or Wilson combat), heavier guide rod spring and grip panels to your preference.

I was told Wilson mags but I'll look int McCormick if it means I can save a few $$. How much of a difference does a heavier spring make? Have fun .45 in that small frame is a handful , nice looking pick up ...small...frame? It's a big old heavy motherfucker compared to my .40 P99, and far more manageable than some of the hand loads I have cooked up for that. I can't wait to start loading some .45 though. The cheapo ammo I shot was inconsistent as hell. I fired some of the Federal HST's I bought and those grouped way better.
BrianZ06
Nice looking 1911. I did some shooting yesterday with mine. Chip McCormick mags is all I use and have had no issues with them.
BrianZ06
I remember I did change out my 2 piece guide rod for a one piece gi style and heavier spring and a buffer. Not sure what type guide rod you have.

Not sure what type guide rod you have. I believe its full length one piece. Ordering some of the buffers now, seems to be worth the couple bucks. Hwilli1647545487
I'd probably throat the barrel as well.
unfunnyryan
I'd probably throat the barrel as well. I polished around the feed of the barrel, but that looks like shit I'm not gonna fuck with. Any idea on what a gunsmith charges for that? I put another 100rd through it today, all went well. Blazer brass 230gr has more flyers than anything I've ever shot. I've decided I really need to get thinner grip panels. The grip I have on it falls far short compared to my P99 and I think that is my only real gripe. $19 seems pretty good for a mccormick 8 rd? I guess the Shooting Star mags aren't as tight as spec as the Power Mags? Is it worth the extra? http://www.midwayusa.com/product/1531697475/chip-mccormick-shooting-star-magazine-1911-government-commander-45-acp-8-round-steel

Throat the barrell, polish the feed ramps etc. might have been a hookup price though.

Furloaf
That's quite crappy. Are they made by Imbel down there or someone else? Made by Taurus proper?

I'd pay attention to the wear surfaces for the first thousand rounds, make sure nothing is mushrooming/folding over/scoring/etc prematurely
