DSM1290
I am inspecting the cam on my 04 Jetta TDI. The surface of the lobe should be a completely smooth machined surface correct? I can feel "lines/ridges" that run horizontally across some of the lobes.
Green Bastard
Yeah, they should be smooth. If you can feel it, I wouldn't chance it myself. I assume not all the cam lobes are worn like this (i.e. it was not designed like that).
STEVE-O
Pretty common in those engines in 04-05, check your lifters and bearings also anything else related to the can to make sure all is good. This would be a good time to upgrade as well
99StockGT
Yea cam lobes should be essentially mirror finished, sounds like you've had wear in there! How far is the engine torn down at this point? Any time you see extensive wear realize that material went somewhere AKA into your oil so there may be some added wear on other component. Oil seem clean when it comes out or are you seeing some "sparkle additive" with it?
