We found one online that states the head gaskets were done at 195k by the previous owner but cannot verify. My question is how can i tell or can I tell if it was done? 99StockGT Posted November 10, 2017 Report Share Posted November 10, 2017 What's the car? On most of those boxer engines you can pretty easily actually SEE the headgasket just popping the hood. However aside from a visual inspection there's really no way to tell without taking it apart, in which case you have to put a new one on anyways Head gaskets / Timing Belt & Waterpump are your most common issues and HAVE to be addressed every 100k or you are just begging for a motor to get wiped out. Grudes Posted November 10, 2017 Report Share Posted November 10, 2017 Look for fresh bolts/gaskets on the exhaust manifolds, look for fresh gaskets on the intake manifold. As others have noted you should be able to tell a lot on these cars just from a visual inspection. I don't think that is true for stock cars. I owned 2 '02 WRXs for many many years and never had any issues with the transmissions. I didn't modify the cars, but I wasn't super easy on them. The 5 speeds have a bad reputation of having "glass cases" but as you say that's typically on modified ones. Most people turning out less than 280-300 don't really run into issues.
