Spidey2721
Girlfriend has a 2000 Explorer Limited. Has the 4.0 V6. In the cold weather, if you start it and let it run to warm up, it will die after a few mins. It's like clockwork. No battery issues. Also at times, it will not start at all unless you use starter fluid. She will see a noticeable drop in MPG in the winter too. Whats CR's guesses? Red Beard
Sounds like a gunked up fuel line/injector or air regulation related. How many miles does it have? Has she serviced it regularly? It could also be an idle air control going bad. I would check service history 1st. Basics like spark plugs (last they were changed). Check the fuel pressure. See if there are any check engine lights (or pending ones that are not showing the light), and go from there.
Cordell
My initial thought was a temp sensor not reading the right temp. Could certainly be a severely carboned up throttle body. Search some Ford forums?

Rocky31186
They are notorious for intake gaskets also. Cold weather makes them worse.
Mace1647545504
Only in cold weather?? At first i would throw in a fuel filter but that would be all the time

Rocky31186
Check out the lower intake gaskets.. The gaskets shrink when its cold and cause this exact issue.
