Couple of things that have me thinking. I like that functionality is the focus. It's ugly. I don't like the power comparison with it pulling a F150 that is not the same class of truck. Needs to be a F250 or F350. Pricepoint of $39k is ok for F150 comparison though. The $39k Cyber truck is the poverty version, what are the specs of it vs the maxed out version?

 

This truck will influence the functionality and pricing for future trucks from all companies. My .02.

But it will push the market along. Still would much prefer another format other then BEV...EV sure, but BEV just doesnt excite me in the least; feels like a cd and walkmens are about to hit the market.

And the F-150 is the correct competitor. They said for electrics to really make a dent they need to go after the best selling vehicle segment.

Not really the best test out there. get the 3.5TT v6 and 4x4 and do it again

Now, please excuse me while I go Google, "Rivian".

I did the same.
Ford has invested $500 million and Amazon has invested $700 million in Rivian. GM was in talks with them, but that fell through and opened the door for Ford.

It's a simple pull force test

 

F=ma

 

The Force possible at the tire is the Mass on the tire times Acceleration (gravity, constant).

 

So, what changes between the two cars is the Mass on each tire.

 

Higher mass means higher force possible before tire slip.

 

Force possible at 4 wheels is higher than 2 wheels, all other things (weight) being equal. This is why 4WD can accelerate faster than 2WD

Everyone is also assuming, probably rightfully so, that the Tesla is heavier.

 

The tires on the Ford truck are spinning (tire smoke), they simply hit their maximum force possible given the weight on only the rear axle.

 

The Ford facing downhill actually means less mass on the rear tires.

.... but it does also mean the Tesla has more work to do, so there is some balance there.

 

In other words, put the exact same engine/motor in those 2, and the Tesla still 'wins' by Weight and AWD. So, not an apples-to-apples comparison.

At the very least, that test needs to be on flat ground.

It definitely should also be AWD vs 4x4.

You really should compare similarly priced vehicles too; so either compare the base Tesla (2WD) to whatever F150 cost $40k, I'm guessing you can get something with AWD and 3.5TT in that price range. Or for the Tesla the showed put a Raptor on the other end of the rope and see how things turn out. Or, like someone else said, if you are getting a truck for towing you can probably get some Super duty with a diesel in that price range too.

Yeah I'll agree the slipping tires makes it just an initial pull test.

The Tesla motor is going to have way more torque available than the gasoline or diesel motor in the Ford, even with gearing. Those take RPM to get up to their torque range while the electric has most of its torque immediately. If they weighed the same, and were pulling the same drag load (not one another), I'm pretty sure the Tesla would still beat the Ford rather easily.

 

Also I didn't check prices but assumed most 49k F-150s were pretty basic optioned, and 250's starting there.

That’s part of the issue too. Look at Tesla’s pricing, no way are you walking in to a dealer with 40k and driving off in any Tesla. As stated earlier in the thread, model 3 owners know that. I was nearly all in for a model 3 myself until the gotchas started adding up, then I was out.

 

It will never be 39k ... Ask model 3 owners haha

I had an interesting convo with my 10 year old son about the whole video of the cyber truck pulling the f150 and it brought it in to perspective for me. Yeah it was a weighted stunt and those who get it know it was fluff, BUT to the average joe they are blown away that that freaky truck could pull an f150 that easily. That was their goal and target, and they nailed it. Keep in mind many of these are the same mouth breathers that watch jersey shore (is that still a thing?) but are the bulk of the population. They are targeting the spoon fed masses who rely on shit information spoon fed to them by Facebook.

It's blowing my mind the F-150 is favored right now.

Edit - got it backwards. The article I read F-150 was favored at the time, it's swung to the Tesla's favor now.

They would be stupid to do it unless they knew 100% that they'd win, however they wanted a fair fight so I assume Ford would use their BEV F150 that towed that train.
