Here it looks like they're traveling hard west, then north...then back east.your kinda right.. generally the winds coming from the mountains out there are cooler then the ocean breeze.. so the winds come from the east pushing the smoke out to sea and then as they warm up and rise, the ocean breeze brings it back towards land.
