Strange...normally winds travel west to east. Here it looks like they're traveling hard west, then north...then back east.

your kinda right.. generally the winds coming from the mountains out there are cooler then the ocean breeze.. so the winds come from the east pushing the smoke out to sea and then as they warm up and rise, the ocean breeze brings it back towards land.

But doesn't the California coast get its water from the Pacific Northwest (Alaska)...hence cold water? So, how are the winds warming up over this generally cold water?

Water along the coast is warmer due to it being shallow. same reason Cali has decent weather almost year round.
