jblosser Posted June 7, 2010 Report Share Posted June 7, 2010 (edited) I have a Bel 995, $200 or so at multiple places.I've had it for a year and no tickets - that's the goal, right?Has a mute button on the part that plugs into the lighter receptacle, which is handy.Radartest.com seems to like it.Had a Whistler I got for $80~ish from Meijer 7 years ago, it worked fine also until it got swiped. jbot Posted June 7, 2010 Report Share Posted June 7, 2010 I have a valentine V1 that I'm happy with. escort has a 9500i or something like that last time i checked (a while ago) that has GPS capabilities, so you can teach it to ignore future false alarms or post speed traps or something like that.i had a escort 8500 previous to to the V1, and it kept getting the "service required" message post-warranty. called escort, and they said pay a bunch of money for a "fix" (refurb). My sister's bel RX65 (same unit, different names) did the exact same thing, same story from the co. I'm sure many others have similar stories, but many others are completely happy with their bel/escort units. i just went by my own experience. If you are serious about getting one that has a longer range than the fuzz's guns do, be prepared to spend 300-400. I did get the occasional "service required" but it was when you would finish the initialization sequence, so I would just unplug it and plug it back in and it was fine. I have not used it for probably a year now though.Yes, radar detectors are legal in Ohio, radar jammers are not. Question is, how many LEOs are going to go with the "it looked like he was speeding" crap. Biggest thing to remember is that a radar detector is not going to save your ass alone. Also, they will keep them off and then flip it on for a surprise when it's too late.This is true if you're cruising at a relatively consistent high speed, but I've had a few warnings as I'm getting ready to pass or getting ready to pin the throttle and the radar detector starts beeping. Although, for the bike I chose to go with the TPX by Adaptiv. I do way too much night riding to have blinding LEDs in my fucking helmet. The Adaptiv is waterproof, audible cable can be connected to your earbuds or speaker equipped helmet (no thanks), but I did install their LED light cluster on top of my speedo housing. It has saved me numerous times and hundreds if not thousands of dollars.If the V1 was weatherproof it would be the only unit I owned. I feel it was a good investment.My advice is to speed intelligently, always scanning ahead for LEOs, and using others as blockers. I love it when some wannabe badass is flying in the #1 lane because I can cruise a safe distance behind and wait for the V1 to light up. The best way to beat the instant-on is a rabbit/blocker ahead of you, and the best way to beat laser is to watch for brake lights ahead!
