e-flores
so as the title states im riding out to colorado next week. my sisters husband bought an 05 ninja 650r from a buddy of his here for stupid cheap and they figured the least expensive way to get it out to them was to have me ride it out there, they are paying for gas, hotel or hotels depending on how long it takes ti get out there, and my plane ticket home. so its of 0 cost to me as well. heres what i need to know. any tips for taking the ever so amazing ride through the midwest?any cool stops along the way? i plan on taking 70 to 24 into the springs.that leads me to another question, any other suggested routes? Casper
It pretty much sucks until you get to Colorado. Be careful with the whole Mississippi River being flooded thing. Lots of bridges closed and what not. You'll definitely want to double check the route with highway patrols or AAA.
redkow97
A friend of mine moved back to Cleveland from CO not that long ago. That. Drive. Is. The. Worst. At least 90% of I-70 is the worst... In MO/KS, you'll get to max out a 650R if you feel like it. That was an option he didn't have in his Wrangler with 33" tires... So at least you'll make some good time through there. Is your brother-in-law sure it's cheaper for you to ride it? Some quick math is showing ~$100 in gas alone. Then add in a hotel stay, and your flight home, and he's looking at $500+I seem to recall Forward Air charging about that much.
redkow97
checked forward air's site, and you can use their container and spend ~$500. On the off chance it fits in the small box, $340.

redkow97
I guess my hotel and flight estimates were a lot higher than you got. $100 for a flight back is killer amazing.$100 for gas sounds dead-on. Add in an oil change when you get there too! If you ahve an iPhone, download one of those trackday apps. None of them work very well for actual on-track use (doesn't grab data often enough), but I want to see the actual top-speed of an EX650 in real-world use Oh, and invest in some good headphones and a really nice helmet if you don't already have one... Like I said, my friend made this drive, and he was calling me every 2 hours bored out of his mind.do you have full leathers? that many miles is tempting fate w/o them... Unless someone buys the sets I have for sale, you're welcome to borrow either.

I've had layovers last longer, and all I did was sit in an airport for two days. Now THAT sucks. E, you'll have a blast. The open road is a lot of fun. That trip to Colorado changed my entire perspective of riding.
sporttour
If you think you might want to do an IBA SS.BB/BBG, this would be an easy route. About 1250 miles, you could do 1k in about 16 hours - or add an extra loop for a couple hundred and go for a BBG. Add the loop and a sleep stop and do an easy BB. e-flores
I'm going to go ahead and say I'm not going to wear my leathers for 1200 miles. I'll go ahead and say some jeans, my boots, gloves, helmet, and jacket are going to be enough. An yes all my gear is high end so I'm food there as well. And ben I'm hoping it does change my riding perspective a lot. Right now I'm ripping through back roads and rocking trackdays so this should be a good time for sure. I have a set of touring bars available to me as well so it's going to be more of a sport touring style ride so who knows my 2nd bike fund may go into a decent touring bike after this though I doubt it, my track addiction is through the roof and I need a trackday before I scratch my hair off.... Ringo
Peg it all the way to colorado. Then once you get there slow down and take the longest way possible of getting to your friends. I had the time of my life up in the mounts near the wanna be reno in colorado. I forget the exact name but its a red looking road all the way to a casino town. Best riding EVER imo. conn-e-rot
650r would not be my bike of choice for a long ride like that but there are worse and I think it'll be a great ride I've always wanted to go to Colorado.Enjoy the ride and the rubber side down... Oh and go easy on the rear brake on the 650r in the rain it likes to lock up.
