Carfax....

I can get Autocheck...not a proble. But Autocheck doesn't have as complete a record as Carfax does in all my test cases. I would gather that Autocheck is cheaper, and that's why dealerships are going that route. I may be wrong.

I wouldn't want the liability of knowing, in detail, what the history of (or what was wrong with) the car I was trying to sell you. That would mean I'm legally obligated to disclose it.

Probably why dealers would migrate to that system + it's cheaper. Win-win for the seller/dealer.

It's true some things might not show up. In those cases the owner took on the full burden to repair the vehicle and did not make an insurance claim. If no claim is made, carfax will not show a thing.
