I am looking to get my 10 year old son his first dirt bike. I dont have a ton to spend right now. found this;

http://columbus.craigslist.org/mcy/2803718961.html

But I think that's way over priced for a 25 year old bike. I havent reached out to the seller yet, so I have zero details, just trying to come up with a figure. I am thinking more like 350ish. I havent bought anything this small since my '74 CR125 Elsinore that I picked up for fifty bucks in '85.

Any advice is much appreciated.

Bill.

You can get a mid to late 90's for what he is asking. I agree the 300 would be top dollar and would have to be in very nice condition.

My opinion is if he is just starting, no matter what the year, you probably need to shy away from an 80 or 85 race bike. I had my son on a RM65 for a long time and even at 12, I am not sure he is ready for a full blown 85...

We have that 65 if you are interested. It is a 97 and am willing to sell it. I don't know how much, but it is stupid clean.

^^ this.

Don't start him on a race bike. Look for a XR75, KDX, CRF, or something along those lines unless you want to scare him away from riding.

By the way, I don't think that's too bad if the bike is super clean and tight. I might go $400 if it is.

Thanks for the feedback guys. We have a quad now, it's a Bayou 220 and he goes stupid fast on it. I adjusted the throttle limiter screw to slow him down. he wasn't to thrilled about that. We had some friends over during the OSU v Mich game and they brought a little 50 with them. He enjoyed the hell out of that one but it seemed to small, both frame size and power size. I want to get something that he can ride for a few years before I need to invest in something more substantial. I am definitely going to keep looking around.I may go check out the one in the ad I posted and offer him 250-300 IF its in good shape. Most of the older bike ads I have looked at on C List in the past have been misleading to say the least.
