newb mistakes

You say your bike wont start, meaning its locked and wont turn or it cranks and wont fire? If your camchain gave up, I'm sure a piston would clap tight against a valve(s) and shouldn't let the engine spin free - never seen/heard of a "non-interference" motorcycle engine:dunno:

If you broke your camchain, you "probably" wouldn't need to replace the camshafts unless there's EXCESSIVE wear on the cogs - camchain, new tensioner, chain guides, valve cover gaskets, and various valve shims to adjust the valvetrain while its down/apart.
