I personally am not a big Mac fan or user though I know they are good computers. I think the only reason I might want to take up this trade is just so I can turn around and sell the computer, I could probably sell it easier than my bike, if nothing else it would be less of a hassle with moving in a few weeks.

I'm really curious what you guys think about this sort of offer???

I don't think I'd do it. I'm not a big fan of used computers. Who knows what he did with it, might be infected with viruses/malware/etc from looking at too much porn. But it would certainly be easier to move than a bike. Not sure how long you've had your bike on CL but I've had mine on there for a little over a month and no luck selling it so far.

Bout the same for me, had mine on there for about a month. Had a few people call with offers of trades but they were all lousy. This is the only trade offer I've had that I am even remotely considering but it's not something I feel too enthusiastic about.

I sell these at Best Buy all day.. and I hate them. I'd suggest no.

If they were a retina display MacBook Pro, I'd say hell yes. Those things start off at $2.1K.

Not really. You have to actually hack your machine to make it happen and even then it's a rare event. There are zero viruses in the wild for Mac OS X. I've been flying with zero virus protection for 20 years with no issues. There's not a Windows user can say that.

It wasn't one of their better models. The iMac with the vent all the way across the back side at the top is the new one. No data on that one yet, but it probably fixed the previous model's problems. Your link shows the new one, but if it was the older model, forget it.

The older model of that iMac is known for overheating it's power supply and failing. If it's out of warranty it's totaled. Costs too much to fix.

The older model is also known for a problem with the display. It likes to put a colored line across the screen from left to right. And then another, and then two more, and then four more, etc. Probably also an over-heating issue. Apple won't necessarily do a warranty for that problem, too many of them are doing it. Again, totaled if it happens.

Apple makes good computers, but this one wasn't necessarily one of them.

Regardless, people still like them and will buy them.

What I'm saying, is it might already have these problems, and he wants to get rid of it.

Yeah, I get to fix these when they break, but like I said, costs too much to repair sometimes.

edit: guessing iMac at 1300 new, I'd go no more than 780 used.

And you have to have a valid and functional warranty with that model. No exceptions.

people, not being mean here, but we run Symantec enterprise, and it reports what is found on which computers. Yes, Macs can be attacked and infected and cleaned without the user ever knowing anything happened. Granted, it's not near as bad as windows, but it's steadily rising, we've pretty much seen the trend on that.

And note that if running Windows as a virtual on a Mac, all bets are off.

I am a Mac fan but I say dont do it. If it were a 27" I would be more inclined to say go for it but that computer is is nothing special and goes for around $800 used. Memory is not expensive anymore so having 12GB only adds like $50 to the used price.

And on a related note, I know someone looking for a good starter bike. I will see what she thinks of this tonight.
