can anyone make a recommendation on how to get into these, and what to expect? i like offroad riding, not super experienced at all, but i don't really want to ride moto x.

any recommendation on a bike? to make things complicated, i want something that i can possibly ride as a street legal rig on occasion. im thinking KTM 450/300 but would I be severely outclassed with that size motor, or am i better off looking smaller?

Having done a lot of both, I can tell ya that hare scrambles is a Hell of a lot tougher on you than MX, mainly due to the amount of time you spend actually riding.

Check with the AMA District where you live - most scrambles and MX are sanctioned through the AMA.

Here's a link to AMA District 11 (southern Ohio)

that lists the race dates;

You might wanna check with some of the clubs and promoters to see what bikes are allowed in what classes, and then buy a bike suited to teh class you want to compete in.

The Athens M/C offers dual sport rides - see: http://www.athensmotorcycleclub.com/id94.html

You might want to try a few of those before entering a scrambles.

I agree with the above. I've been there too. The only thing the MX is harder on, are the jumps. And unfortunately, there aren't hardly any tracks that run natural terrain anymore.

You should look into Grand Prix races. There are several promoters that are running them these days, and they are a good compromise between the two. Plus, you don't have to be there all day long to run your moto. However, it is still a 45 minute race if I'm not mistaken.

Check out this link http://actionsportsracing.com/grand_prix.html

Also, here is a must join forum for the offroad racers http://www.pitracer.com/vbulletin/forum.php
