Hi all. I've lived in central Ohio all my life and I'm currently a first year student at OSU. I've been drag racing for 12 years, starting when I was eight in the Jr Drag Racing League and now Sportsman/Street classes. Now in to the important stuff.
3 years ago I bought a 1992 Camaro RS. It was a 305 TBI with a five speed and shortly thereafter my dad and I started with modifications. Since the car is built to be a competitive track car the first mod was to take out the 5 speed and swap it for a built 700R4. I know, opposite of what everyone else does but consistency is key in bracket racing so an auto is better in that regard. I took it to the track a couple times and it was slow: mid 16s. The next winter we did bodywork. Jack Maxton body shop did the metalwork: quarter panel skins and fixed rust around the windshield. Then we did the priming, blocking, and painting and I refurbished and polished the wheels.
Next we started on power. I got a 5.7 from a 1999 suburban, was in good shape but had over 200,000 miles. It had the vortec heads so had decent power for a factory engine. I put on shorty headers, 3inch all the way back to a flowmaster 40. We kept the TBI and got the factory redone by Dynamic efi, so it is now flash based and fully tune able from the laptop. Also installed sub frame connectors. Ran that setup last year and it did well. Ran low 14s best pass was a 14.00 at 96.
This year we took the engine out to freshen it. Got it honed (only 0.001in wear after 205,000 miles and a season of racing!), five angle valve job, and got the seats cut for more lift, all bearing replaced. We got everything back and did some slight porting on the heads, then put it back together: stock pistons, stock rods, stock crank (had to be ground, race grid by fowler), lt4 hot cam kit (lt4 hot cam, lt4 springs, 1.6 full roller alum. rockers), one piece pushrods, and new valve covers. Still have to put it back in the car. Spring break project, then it will need tuned. Should be right around 400hp and 425ft lb of torque which should put it right around mid to high 12s. Other mods from this winter were new Moser axles, new diff cover with set screws to put pressure on the bearing caps, a driveshaft loop, added four temp sensors and a gauge, and I got a 3in cowl hood which we still need to paint.
I think that’s about it here's some pics
