Amanda is leaning toward letting the Wing go in favor of the RT. She likes it a lot and thinks I should keep the RS as a spare BMW. Everyone needs a spare BMW, right?

Sure.  No problem if you have that spare pot o' gold sitting at the end of the rainbow.  As for ever aspiring to own a mile-muncher like the Wing or the RT, I'm at the point where the weight will become an issue, not to mention that type of riding holds absolutely zero appeal for me.  Even just rolling the damn things around on a flat garage floor is gonna get sketchy as I age.  Pretty sure the RS is gonna be my "retirement" 2-wheeler.  When riding a 500# bike becomes a chore--or worse, dangerous for me--I'll turn my gaze to something with 4 wheels and lots of HP!  Smoke 'em if you got 'em!

passing occurs on back county two lanes and it feels unsafe to pull out to pass in 2nd gear to be met with no power until you are halfway past the vehicle you are passing.

Well, you could always drop to first.  Bike prolly pulls well past 70 MPH before it hits redline. 😱 ☠️

That dyno comparison does say it all though.  Really surprised Ducati didn't do a better job of smoothing the throttle response.

With a tune, you'll definitely have a more user friendly experience.

  3. Jen, as most have said already, break-in guidelines are more for protection of the manufacturer than the consumer.  I agree that it makes sense to follow them if only to avoid nasty surprises should you encounter an issue with the engine on your new bike.

I think what you are remembering about break-in rules dates to many years ago (back when I was a young rider 😕) when the machining and clearance specs were not as well controlled and consistent as they are now.  The mantra was to run the engine at less than WOT and especially, to vary the RPM for the first few 100s of miles.  Theory is (was?) that under closed throttle/deceleration conditions, the engine created a high vacuum in the combustion chamber which helped "draw" oil up the cylinder walls, lubricating the piston(s) and upper cylinder(s) and thus, ensuring break-in without damaging the bores.  The more precise machining in modern engines coupled with metallurgical advances and the fact that many manufacturers use a Nikasil coating for the bores has kind of made the old rules unnecessary.  The other point is that modern motorcycles all have an ECU that likely records events like throttle plate position, over-revs, pre-detonation, coolant and exhaust temperatures, and a few other data points that could be used against you in a warranty claim.

Likelihood is that you could probably "run it like you stole it" and nothing bad would happen, but this way, you get to enjoy the anticipation of that first WFO blast to redline when you hit the magic number!

  4. Pauly:  Cross posted your sale to a couple of the FB MC forums I belong to (Greater Cincinnati BMW, MSTA).  Hate to see you sell this beauty.  Best sport tour motorcycle ever built!

After I was taken out on my '16 RS by the bozo driver back in '22, I drove all the way to St Louis to buy its replacement.  Hope I don't have to sell it until I'm in the dirt.

  5. Hey Mike, Bill Francis in Cincinnati.  I bought one of the Arai IOM-TT helmets from you a few years ago at a righteous price and it's getting a bit long in the tooth, although still not ready for retirement.  Saw the new Arai RX-7V Evo with the gorgeous IOM graphics.  I know it's a limited production and this would be more of a "want" than a "need, but if you have one in a large, DM me with a price.  Thx!

  6. This option is something I've ALWAYS WANTED....no, NEEDED....in my automobile.  I mean Bamboo?  Rainforest?  Iceberg? Waterfall?

Excuse me, but now I have to go burn my 2018 F150 XL.  It doesn't even have carpet!  😰

SR16 through WV, Burkes Garden, Marion VA, Smokies, Franklin NC, Blood Mountain, and anywhere else that my daughter can think of.  We will be watching the weather and adjusting accordingly.

Sounds like a fantastic trip.  Awesome roads!!!

We are hearing it won't really start until April.

Jim:  That's pretty much the timing the dealer told us for the car, too.  Interesting that they've issued a "Stop Sale" to dealers on new bikes but haven't done the same for driving the affected vehicles.  If I had to make a WAG, the faulty impellers suffer more significantly when owners don't keep an adequate level of fuel in the tank and the pump has a greater likelihood of overheating.  Not to say that's the case, but I've recommended that the GF not run the tank down past 1/4.

  9. Same recall as the Accords and some other Honda models built around that time.  The GFs Accord is under the same recall but the service centers here say they don't have parts for the fix yet.  Hoping that doesn't mean the recall will drag on for months like the Takata air bag recall....

I did something similar once. Changing fork oil needed to measure the oil. Wife was gone so I grabbed a measuring cup from the kitchen. It was glass, figured no problem I can get it done before she gets home.

Nope, she rolled in way sooner than I expected.

Nothing that some expensive jewelry and a dozen roses can't fix.

I would not say problematic. Just different and I didn't feel like dealing with it...and the extra 100 pounds and the extra grand.

It just didn't fix anything that I needed fixed.

I kind'a thought that DCT was a concept designed to draw in new riders who were intimidated by complexity of the hand clutch/foot shift on motorcycles.  Hardly seems like putting DCT on a top spec GW is gonna draw new riders to that model as a first bike.

One of the things that kept me away from the DCT was parking lots...slow turns and what not. You have to throttle up and drag the rear brake.

This seems better, a clutch lever you can use instead.

Ah...did not know that DCT was problematic at low speeds.  Never ridden one.

Can you supply me with awesome homemade apple crisp?

You seem like a nice man.  However, I literally have to grovel to get an occasional pie from the house chef and I typically bogart the whole thing.  So...prolly not. 😑

...on the 2025 Goldwing @Pauly is going to get a hell of a deal on my current wing.

I read up on that technology a couple days ago.  Interesting but not much advantage over the DCT system other than 20# weight savings.  Obviously, a difference of 20# on a 650 sport bike is huge, but not so much on a 700-750# Wing.  Still able to go automatic or manual shift operation, still able to use the clutch lever, able to lock out the e-function with the push of a button.

Besides, maybe SOMEONE ELSE beside @Pauly wants the opportunity to be your new BFF.... 😆

I have some pretty thick gloves, but they weren’t cutting it. My cut off is usually 50°. When I left on Friday morning it was 42°. I’ve ridden in the upper 40s and been fine. Someday I’ll get off my wallet and buy some heated gloves.

@durk:  I won't poo-poo the idea of quality heated gloves, but I've ridden in temps down to the upper 20s without.  The suggestion of latex gloves under your gauntlet is a good one, especially if you run into cold fog or drizzle.  I "augment" the thermal quality of my regular MC gloves with the cheap/readily available heated hand warmers that hunters and other outdoorsmen use when the temps get ugly.  You can find them just about anywhere and they fit easily in your gloves.  I typically put them on the back of my hand to keep the blood warmed, which works great if you also have heated grips.  They make all different sizes for various applications.  They feel real good slipped into the waistband of your pants to keep your lower back toasty on cold mornings.  As long as the package is factory sealed, they're good for several years and most generate heat for a full 6-8 hours.

Other than that don't see anyone else being active in here and riding anymore 😞

Well, not eggzackly true....although I'm not one of the Ohio Rider OGs who did a lot of riding together over the years.  Some good riders I hook up with in Cinti.

I'm in SW OH so it doesn't make any sense for me to ride almost 3 hours to the start when I can jump across the river and ride the twisty goodness of NKY in under 20 min.

Was out last Sunday for a 200 mile romp in the backwoods through major metropolitan areas like Grant's Lick, Butler, Kelat, Berry, Boyd's Station, Morgan, Mt Zion, Beaverlick, and of course, Rabbit Hash.  Took the ferry back across the river to home.

Doing a lot of day riding and still trying to get back my form and stamina from the crash last July.  At 72-soon-to-be-73, bones don't heal near as fast as they do when you're 50-something, and regaining muscle and flexibility is an even longer battle.  🤬
