  1. Your polite society theory doesn't play out in the real world. Every other gang banger has a firearm and yet seems to have no fear of being shot by others. Your scenario works for you but not for most people that mean to cause harm.

There are too many firearms and adding more to the mix won't mean less deaths.

Actually, if you take into account where the "gang banger" hangs out it really isn't much of a surprise. And if you take into account their education, home life and outlook on life it really isn't too surprising. Its really no different an attitude the average 1%er has. You argument is specious.

  2. I say again... get one or two of the books that describe all the vegetation that is edible in our area of Ohio. Learn it.

I'm pretty sure weapons would only be needed for a short time. Darwin takes care of that.

Quoted for truth but will add weapons are for long term as well. Hunting would be a top priority.

Yep, agree with both. Also, stock seeds for a garden.

  3. No, you are totally correct about .380 vs 12ga. Just didn't want anyone thinking using a shot gun is a 100% guarantee you hit the target.

Both you guys make valid points but don't forget the pucker factor of the business end of a 12 gauge vs a .380.

  4. Here are the "bullet points" (haha - i'm hilarious) of my situation:

    - my primary concern is home defense, but I want to actually USE any firearm I purchase. Range shooting needs to be possible and affordable (i know the last range I was at didn't allow rifles or shotguns...)

    Shotgun, find a new range.

    - my wife doesn't like firearms. I have to choose ONE (for now). She particularly dislikes the size and "image" of shotguns, or this would be an easy decision.

Tough Sh*t...bad guys dislike shotguns too.

    - I am CHEAP. $200 is my absolute max budget. Cheaper would be better.

    - cost and availability of ammo matter a lot.

    Shotgun meets all those requirements

    - "stopping power" isn't a huge concern for me. Missing an intruder and shooting through my neighbor's wall IS a concern...

Shotgun gives you both stopping and less likelihood of shooting up the the neighbors house. With the added advantage (with buckshot) that you don't NEED to be an accomplished marksman. Practice is always recommended.

  5. Several people have mentioned it and it's true. Carry what you are comfortable with. I don't think there is anything wrong with a wheel gun for an inexperienced CCW holder. A gunfight is no place to learn about double feeds or stovepipes. So a wheel gun makes sense to me for someone who can then spend time learning and practicing with their semi-auto.
