  1. Congrats, now go back and be with the family!
  2. Confused with this. The current Barrett M82 in service has an effective range of 5,900ft. How is this new thing better? It is still a medium range weapon based on a .300 winmag
  3. Man all you rice lovin, GM haters out there. JK guys. The buick v-6 engines got a lot better as the years went on. Like I said, I had a '77 olds (Omega hatchback thank you) that had the 231ci engine in it. The factory mill was admittedly a slug, it was worn out, leaked coughed and wasn't anywhere near the rated 100hp. I swapped it out for an '83 buick v-6 with all the goodies. Holley single plane street dominator intake, Holley 400cfm 4-barrel, bored with high comps, ported and polished, oversize valves, a crane cam, dual coil valve springs, headers and plenty of other goodies. It ran like a dream and put a little over 250hp and 260ftlbs to the tires. The best part it could still put out 18mpg without effort. It got the same mpg as the original '77 engine and made better then double the power. Heck the standard 350 v-8 in a corvette couldn't do better than those numbers until the 1990's. I had fun with that car because that engine had a weird sound to it. It loped at idle and had a mean raspy note at high rpm. People would think you where sporting a worked small-block and you would pop the hood to show them a cute looking v-6.
  4. Beegreenstrings, That's the cartouche I was asking about. On the original guns it was the inspectors stamp from the armory that produced the gun. On the reproduction stocks it is usually the gunsmith's own stamp or a reproduction of an original mark. USGI stocks in good condition are harder to come by these days. I had a nice condition winchester stock on my one rifle that I sold for almost as much as I purchased the rifle for. DGR has a couple original stock sets for sale, http://dgrguns.com/0-main-page-tools.htm you can check them out if you want. They have some new production stocks that are to die for also.
  5. If you have ever wanted to turbo the 3.8L they can make insane horsepower with enough money. A stock GN could push 450 plus with the right chip and the turbo turned way up, injectors and such. After that you are starting to look at stage II heads and block girdles with lots of billet parts inside. There are people pushing over 800hp from that motor. There is still debate about one guy getting 1000+ from a GN. If you look up Chris Chow Grand national. It smokes the wheels on the dyno and still puts down 1077HP. Most people claim that was after he switched to a v-8 motor but I have never seen a definitive answer or pictures of the car with the hood up. I just continue to bow down to GNX awesomeness.
  6. King, the stock looks real nice on the Garand, is it one of the new CMP ones? Can't quite make out the cartouche in your picture. You would like the stock I have on my Springfield. It is a hybrid walnut I had put on the gun roughly 8 years ago. The pictures just don't do it justice. Had Dean's gun restorations do the work on mine. "LIFE'S TOO SHORT TO SHOOT AN UGLY GUN!"
  7. My '77 Olds had the 3.8L Buick engine in it also. Back then it was the 231CI v-6. It was first introduced in that size in '75 or so. It is a shame to see that series engine be canceled as most of them where good running, long lasting machines.
  8. I know you are looking at auto's, or least the thread seamed to point that way. Just as the flip side of the coin, don't pass over the revolvers. I have a Smith 340PD. It is the J-frame hammerless that they make in the Scandium alloy frame. Certainly on the more expensive side but it does give you the option to carry 38's or 357mag. It weighs 12 ounces so it is nice and light for a carry piece. The only draw backs would be the very heavy recoil with .357 rounds and that it is only a 5 shot.
  9. Had to get a better picture of the handguns. I never had a group shot. Top row first is; Uberti made Colt/Walker blackpowder revolver in .44 S&W 340PD Airweight in .357mag Springfield 1911A1 Bottom row; Ruger MKII CZ-52 Luger P-08, 1921 production And a Gamo .177 CO2 airpistol for practicing in the basement. Also Edited my first post to include what they are.
  10. For all the people that talk guns, not many pictures to prove it. Let the new guy spark this thread up. Don't know if the bike collection hurts because of the guns or the other way around. Here are the rifles last time I emptied the safe on cleaning day. Using the reloading supplies for a background. Rifles Lt-Rt Browning Gold, sporting clays shotgun Interarms Mark-X in .25-06 Stevens Model 70 visible loader in .22lr Springfield m1903 Eddystone m1917 Enfield No1Mk3 (1911 manufacture) Underwood M1 carbine (late '43, early '44 manufacture) Springfield Garand (1941 manufacture) H&R Garand (early 50's manufacture) Mosin M-44 Enfield No5 Jungle carbine Enfield No1Mk3 (sporterized) Yugo SKS Ruger 10/22
  11. I have one of the Kershaw Leek 1660st knives. Nice compact knife, assisted opener with a good edge if you only wanted to use it for protection. Like somebody else had already mentioned, it doesn't hold it's edge if used for day to day duties. Don't know about the legality issue, I have asked 2 LEO's since moving to Ohio about it and neither had any problem with the action and felt it was legal.
  12. I rode on Sunday last week. I will get out on weekends until the roads are icy or snow covered. I don't take it to work as often but I usually don't quit until the temps are below freezing.
  13. Yuengling (both lager and black/tans) when I am back East or any time my parents come out here. Sierra Nevada, Killians, Dogfish head 90 minute is awesome. The Columbus brewing 90 shilling ale is good as is the Great Lake Burning river ale.
  14. I've had my bike for two full riding seasons and have 16.6K on it. I don't know the exact start miles for this year but figure roughly 8k each year give or take. I have ridden it to the blue ridge park way twice this year so I figure I can add the extra to this years total.
  15. Thanks for all the Welcomes. As for the screen name I used to have a Honda. My first truly legal street bike was a Canadian model '85 Honda VF1000F. This is back in '98 ish and I had just gotten my first computer. AOL was who I was using at the time. I had tried for vf1000rider as a screen name but something happened and the last R got cut off. I never bothered to change it and it has been that way ever since. It's kinda nice as nobody else uses it.
  16. Any way, felt like saying hello and give a quick intro. I haven't really been to any of the OhioRider events but I'm sure to have met some of you around town while at a bike night. The guys from Desmohio know me (is that a good thing? ). Looking forward to a nice long winter of staring at my bike and wanted to get active on the forum so I could scratch that couch riding itch. That and so Yotaman will be happy I finally joined. Current bike is an '07 Ducati Sportclassic. Got it in '08 and have been riding the poor thing mercilessly. Little over 16k miles on it so far and no end in sight. Dave.
